Seventeen killed in quake in eastern Turkey
Source: Reuters

By Ferit Demir Ferit Demir

KOVANCILAR, Turkey (Reuters) – A strong earthquake killed 17 people in villages in eastern Turkey early on Monday and rescuers were working to free survivors trapped under the rubble, officials said.

Turkey's Kandilli earthquake observatory said the quake measured 6.0 magnitude and had its epicenter at Basyurt in Elazig province. It struck at 4:32 am local time (9:32 p.m. EST Sunday). Quakes of magnitude 6 and higher can cause severe damage.

Hospital workers and relatives carried casualties from cars and ambulances into the state hospital in the nearby town of Kovancilar as concerned locals looked on. More than 20 people were injured.

In nearby villages, locals lit fires to keep warm on the streets after rushing out of their houses in panic before dawn as the quake struck.

The state emergency administration said in a statement 17 people had died in the three villages of Okcular, Yukari Kanatli and Kayali, state-run Anatolian news agency reported.

2. Mr Robertson, why are the Turks Smitten by God (another devilish pact, or just being Muslim?)
Besides earthquakes, God has many other tricks up his sleeve.

For a quick quiz on other ways god smites those who piss him off go to Landover Baptist Church

A Haitian in the rubble of her home. One of those Robertson says was Smitten by God because of ancestor's pact with devil. Feel the Christian love.

4. Seriously? he said that?
what a fucking moron!
Even a child with the most basic knowledge (bed time story) of the legend knows it was a gift to honor the Trojans!

and do I really need to comment on the horrible nature of earthquakes?

I hope the body count stays low, and that the majority are light injuries.

7. This AM on KFI, radio dickwad Bill Handel said with immense pride that
unlike Turkey, where they live in stone and mud huts, when we have a quake that size in the USA!USA!USA! nobody dies, presumably because of our oh-so-superior construction. And then he went on to describe how he ran out of his house in the Hollywood Hills during the Northridge quake.

It boggles the mind sometimes.

For the uninformed, the Northridge quake killed 72.
