It's official: Hansen Clarke to challenge Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick for U.S. House seat

State Sen. Hansen Clarke has announced he will run for the congressional seat held by fellow Detroit Democrat Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

Clarke entered the Michigan governor's race in January, but dropped out less than two weeks later. On Monday, he said he would run in the August Democratic primary in the 13th District.

Kilpatrick is the mother of Kwame Kilpatrick, the former Detroit mayor forced to resign after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice in September 2008. The congresswoman has represented the district for 11 years.

A message seeking comment was left Monday with Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick's campaign office.
