Stupak: Health bill abortion fight can be resolved
By JOHN FLESHER (AP) – 1 hour ago

TAWAS CITY, Mich. — Prospects are good for resolving a dispute over abortion that has led some House Democrats to threaten to withhold support of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, a key Michigan Democrat said Monday.

Rep. Bart Stupak said he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week in a quest for wording that would impose no new limits on abortion rights but also would not allow use of federal money for the procedure.

"I'm more optimistic than I was a week ago," Stupak said in an interview between meetings with constituents in his northern Michigan district. He was hosting a town hall meeting Monday night at a local high school.

"The president says he doesn't want to expand or restrict current law (on abortion). Neither do I," Stupak said. "That's never been our position. So is there some language that we can agree on that hits both points — we don't restrict, we don't expand abortion rights? I think we can get there."

Big facepalm for the article's final paragraph:

Ellen Smith, administrator of a company that operates 10 medical clinics across the region, said Stupak should hold his ground.
"I don't believe abortion should be paid for with tax money," Smith said.

1. I don't want to pay for wars with my tax dollars either.
The government shouldn't allow people to pick and choose how their tax dollars are spent, but for some reason the so-called pro-life people seem to think that an exception to that rule should apply to them. They're special, you know.

14. not to mention, he's now got stiff competition for his seat & I'll bet
the leadership is saying, if you want us to support your incumbency, better play ball with us instead of going off the field with your few companeros.

4. In other words
"we don't restrict, we don't expand abortion rights"?
Nothing is different than what already exists? ...oh wow. Pfffft.

Could it be that you didn't like the attention given your creepy Family Ties? That is why you are now willing to use language that in effect, doesn't change crap anyway?
Could it be that you are nothing but a blowhard?

You and all your other obstructionist cohorts that continually use women's reproductive rights to throw all kinds of politically driven bullshit into preventing genuine reform for EVERYONE who truly needs it can stuff it.

Frankly, the way I am feeling tonight about the do nothing, go nowhere, full of crap, the-real-people in-this-country-don't-matter government...I can quote Shakespeare.
"A plague on both your houses"

7. So glad you put 'reason' in quotes!
Since he's saying that if they capitulate and change the language to something he finds acceptable, he'll agree to the bill.

When did compromise become 'do it my way and I'll agree'?

8. THIS is why he's open to 'reason'
WASHINGTON – Michigan’s Bart Stupak, a Democratic congressman who could help bring down health care reform over an abortion provision, is getting a primary challenge this year.

Connie Saltonstall of Charlevoix said today she plans to run against Stupak for the Democratic nomination of Michigan’s First Congressional District, citing Stupak’s efforts to stop health care reform if it doesn’t ban use of government money for abortions. Stupak, a former state trooper from Menominee, has held the seat since 1993.

This year and last, Stupak has made a name for himself as a thorn in the side of some congressional Democrats pushing legislation for health care reform. While largely supportive of those efforts, he successfully attached an amendment last fall to ban use of federal funds to help pay for abortions.

“I believe that he has a right to his personal, religious views, but to deprive his constituents of needed health care reform because of those views is reprehensible,” said Saltonstall in a statement.

12. Only one medical procedure is a Constitutional right and that is the only one that Congress targets.
Does that make any kind of sense at all?

AFAIK, even saving the life of the mother is not an exception. Who are Congress Critters to decide a man is better off with a motherless infant than he is with his wife?

If Stupak is against abortion, he should not have one.

NOTHING in the Bible requires him to impose his interpretation of the Bible on every woman in America.

I am so tired of patriarchial tyrants. A blink of an eye removed from the Neanderthal, who, btw, Stupak resembles.
