Senate to take up unemployment insurance extension
Source: AP

WASHINGTON — Legislation extending unemployment insurance for the long-term jobless faces a key test vote in the Senate, its momentum helped by about 60 popular tax breaks for individuals and businesses that expired at the end of last year.

The measure also prevents doctors from absorbing a crippling cut in Medicare payments, extends health insurance subsidies for the unemployed and gives cash-starved states help with Medicaid, the federal-state program providing health care to the poor and disabled.

The unemployment insurance alone — to provide weekly unemployment checks averaging above $300 to people whose core 26-week benefit package has run out — will cost $66 billion through December. In some states people are eligible to receive benefits for up to 99 weeks.

The bill, and the test vote Tuesday, demonstrate the difficulty Democrats face as they focus on jobs. It doesn't include new ideas for boosting jobs, but instead reprises elements of last year's $862 billion economic stimulus bill, which is earning mixed reviews from voters. Simply extending those provisions has produced a far more expensive measure than a separate so-called jobs bill that Democrats hope to soon send to President Barack Obama. That measure would boost highway spending and give tax breaks to companies that hire the unemployed and could clear the Senate for Obama's desk this week.

At a gross cost of about $148 billion, Tuesday's measure illustrates the extraordinary cost of the unemployment safety net as the economy inches out of the recession. Democrats say the unemployment benefits inject demand into the economy and say renewing the tax cuts helps preserve existing jobs.

Oh Com'on. Drop a few of those Fighter Jets, Nuclear Weapons or Satellite Killers
and America will be just fine. Why do we need these offensive weapons anyway
How many times are we gonna defeat the boogieman ?

Reminds me of an old song. Can't remember the name or the group
but those words have always stuck with me ....

"The things you think, are precious I, can't understand"

My brother and sister Americans are the only thing that's precious in these times. :fistbump:

K&R ! # 5

3. That's from ...
"Reelin' in the Years"

Thanks for the good thoughts.

My UI benefits ran out three weeks ago. I'm pretty much screwed if they don't do something. I've got plenty of time to sharpen up pitchforks and make torches though!

5. Yep, the total cost of those two wars so far is $3 TRILLION PLUS.
So for 2% of that, we can help the unemployed and all that other.

Can you spare a dime? Hell, we're talking TWO CENTS here, but of course, that money would go to the wrong people, not the have-mores.

4. My son was in an ER yesterday in FL for 9 hrs before they finally admitted him.
He has medicaid and is chronically ill with Progressive MS. This visit was for another issue and he had been there twice in the last week trying to get them to do something for him. Finally his PCP who is so over strapped with patients it is ridiculous came in to see him and after 9 hrs of writhing pain my son was admitted to the hospital.

This medicaid extension payment has to be made to make sure people like my son are taken care of and not forced on the streets! I get so damn mad when I hear the bastards on the right say "Oh but everyone can go to the ER for help when they need it". BS! Yes, you can go to the ER but if it is for something more then the flu you are in deep trouble! This is America? Yes this is America!

7. Got my last check today....
I have been on it 26 weeks and got a check with a message saying if I qualified it would come automatally.....I'm very p**ed off now. I've worked for years, lost my job due to no fault of my own. My company decided to offshore because our customers were having a hard time getting credit to purchase our products....so they closed the US office...no COBRA even. If a company is closed they don't have to do COBRA. Now after sending I don't know how many resumes out, and getting no response, they cut UI.....I could scream. Took a long long long walk. It just isn't right. so many got several extensions....now my group....zapp your it. Screw you!
