Toyota to fix more Tundras for rust problems
Source: reuters

DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota said on Tuesday it would fix all Tundra pickups sold in the United States for the 2000 to 2003 model years to address a risk that part of the truck's frame could corrode, causing spare tires or even the gas tank to drop to the road.

In November, Toyota Motor Corp had recalled 110,000 Tundras sold in 20 cold-weather states, saying exposure to heavy road salt could cause the corrosion. Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons was unable to say how many additional vehicles would be covered by the additional repairs.

The repair campaign comes at a time when the world's top automaker is trying to recover from a damaging series of recalls that have tarnished its reputation and cut into its sales and financial results.

2. Unlike the earlier recall, Toyota termed the notice sent on Tuesday a "special service campaign."
IIRC, Toyota was handling the rusted Tacomas with a quiet, "as needed" recall. I think they bought some of the unsafe bisected Tacomas back from the owners.

5. I would bet that the majority of the rustbuckets will be coming from
the land that pollutes it's roadways and waterways with salt. That would be "up there" in the great white north.

6. Well...those of us "up here" prefer not to play a deadly game of bumper cars on ice.
Not sure anyone from Louisiana should be pointing fingers about pollution, LOL.

8. Wow. You'd rather we die horrible deaths in car accidents than blame Toyota for poor design?
Holy fucking shit!!

When American cars rusted out, people went ape-shit and said "foreign cars don't do that".

Now when foreign cars do it, people like you say "why do we use salt on the road to keep people from dying"

14. Oh yeah.... if everyone in here could retract that which they wish
they had, or if the edit function didn't have a shelf life.... a lot of electrons would be spared their perilous journey across the backbone of the internets.

16. Someone should put into MS Word templates... Dear boss, I quit,
or how about, Dear boss, I'm firing myself... I'm sure many letters have been sent with the previous one only to have the person regret it later on.... if they were added into the template menu you could just say... oops, musta hit the wrong option.

10. Rust? I thought the days of using old battleships for cars was over.
My old Honda rusted like a son-of-a-gun. At the time, I was told Honda had been using some kind of inferior steel. Anyway, it rusted in the strangest places. Ran fine however. Tis was also years ago.
I don't think I've seen a rusty car in these parts for ages.

I now have a Pilot and there is not a speck of any type of rust on it and it is a 2005.

I feel sorry for anyone who owns stock in Toyota. There seems to be some problem with almost every model they make.

I do, however, feel far worse for those who have been in accidents or have just given up on their particular model and lost money.

How to ruin a good name, Toyota. You are at the top of the list.

11. It wasn't enough for them to take over the small and medium size car markets,
they had to take over the large SUV and Pick Up markets also. I noticed years ago they have the same problems with the Tundra models that Ford, GM, and Dodge have, especially with the tailgates and the tailgate hinges rusting out.

12. I find it pretty amazing how a highly respected company can fall so fast . . .
I've been driving Toyotas for probably 30 years, and have loved every one I've owned . . . but my current vehicle is a 2002 Camry which, if reports are to be believed, is one of the models potentially at risk for rapid and uncontrolled acceleration . . . I've told myself that I can just shift into neutral (it's an automatic) if anything happens, but I must admit to being a little nervous what with the almost daily reports of incidents from California to New York . . .

could this get so bad that the company goes under? . . . I would never have thought so, but I'm beginning to wonder how much bad publicity they can absorb . . . stay tuned . . .
