Scientists to review climate body
Source: BBC

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked the world's science academies to review work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC has been under pressure over small errors in its last major assessment of climate science in 2007. Mr Ban said the overall concept of man-made climate change was robust, and action to curb emissions badly needed.

Robbert Dijkgraaf, the council's co-chair, said the process would be independent of UN agencies. Scientists would be selected so the panel included both inside knowledge of the IPCC and outside perspectives.

"The panel will look forward and will definitely not go over all the vast amount of data in climate science," he said. "It will see what are the procedures, and how can they be improved, so we can avoid certain types of errors."

Rajendra Pachauri, the IPCC's chair, welcomed the move. "The IPCC stands firmly behind the rigour and reliability of its Fourth Assessment Report from 2007, but we recognise that we can improve," he said.

1. If they're not going to go over all the data...
... then it's going to come across as a CYA move by the United Nations, which, while paying for it, is calling for what is basically just a review of the IPCC's operational practices. In order to appear even-handed, the reviewing board will most likely say something to the effect of "...the IPP's basic premises were more or less correct, being based on good science, but there were a couple of regrettable instances where some of the data was not fully vetted... etc, etc, we all know the drill... It's not going to fly; the usual suspects have already gone that route - this is simply resorting to the fallacy of appealing to authority... putting a turd between two slices of bread does not change the basic composition of said dropping... The damage done to the movement is truly biblical; right up there with the disillusionment of the Millerites in the 1840's.

2. a) it's not a fucking "movement". it's fucking "reality."
b) comparing this to some end-times cult is pretty fucking stupid.

Global warming is that serious and that real. If ya think that makes folks making others more aware cultists, then you are dumber than you could imagine.

"the IPP's basic premises were more or less correct, being based on good science, but there were a couple of regrettable instances where some of the data was not fully vetted"

This may actually be the case. If so, I hope it's what they conclude.
