UN expert slams US for not looking into torture claims
Source: AFP

GENEVA — The UN's independent expert on torture on Wednesday criticised the Obama administration for not investigating allegations of torture made when president George W. Bush was in power.

"This is my criticism of the Obama administration: There is not enough done to remedy what has been done in the past," Manfred Nowak, UN special rapporteur on torture, told journalists.

"I think it's a legal question," he said.

"The US are a part of the UN Convention against Torture, but there are very clear legal obligations -- wherever you have indications, complaints about torture, then you have to investigate them independently and effectively."

Claims of torture and secret detention of suspects arose while the Bush administration was waging its "war on terror".

3. Obama has a choice to make. To become a prosecutor or accessory after the fact.
If Obama doesn't prosecute they should put him the cell next to Bush & Cheney.

6. He's only been POTUS for 13 months!
Obama's a master chess player.
If he pushes the issue we might not get meaningful HCR.
So you'd rather have Pres. McCain?
So sorry you didn't get your pony.
I see the Obama-haters are out in force today.

Did I miss any?

(+1 by the way.)

9. If Obama started his administration by prosecuting Bush & Cheney.
The republicans would have been to busy defending Bush & Cheney to fight health care. Obama could have passed Universal Health Care for every American in his first week. All he would have had to do is tell republicans that if they pass health care Americans would be in a better mood and be more inclined to go easy on Bush & Cheney. But if you vote against it that will piss off America and they'll demand the death penalty. You need to get out there and play nice with the Democrats and kiss America's butt.
