Madoff reportedly assaulted by another inmate
Convicted swindler treated for broken nose, fractured ribs, cuts after attack

By Paul Thomasch

NEW YORK - Bernard Madoff, the swindler who orchestrated a multibillion dollar fraud, was attacked by another inmate at the federal prison where he is serving a 150-year sentence, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

The report said that the attack occurred last December. After it, Madoff was moved to a low-security medical center for treatment, where he was treated for a broken nose, fractured ribs and cuts to his head and face, according to a felon currently at the prison in Butner, N.C.

At the time of the incident last year, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons said the disgraced financier was being treated for high blood pressure and dizziness. The Federal Bureau of Prisons and Ira Sorkin, a lawyer for Madoff, did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the Wall Street Journal report.

3. Maybe someone outside whom Madoff defrauded has connections inside.
Supposedly, Madoff wanted to go to prison because he was afraid he' be killed on the outside.

30. Not any more of a judgment than "Gee, that poster really hates the New York Yankees."
(Provided the target of the comment actually makes a lot of posts disparaging the Yankees, especially if that happens in non-baseball threads.)

6. Most folks seem to consider this a routine part of incarceration
Punishment is meted out either by the fists of penises of the other prisoners. It's one of the first things you hear when somebody is being sent "up the river"---"those other prisoners will sure take care of him".

7. Not so much at Butner
The vast majority of sex between inmates is consensual, at least at that institution. Going rate is three cigarettes (which are contraband). The officers do keep an eye on them, but they find the darndest places to get it on.

Murder is fairly rare at a medium-level facility such as Butner. If Madoff is killed, it will likely not be for anything he did outside, but because of the various goings on inside.

At least, that's what I'm told by someone who works there.

13. Married.
I had a big problem with them putting Madoff in Butner: it houses people Madoff screwed. They know who he is, and they're still pissed. I know if I was laundering money with Madoff, eventually I would want it back, and Madoff had other ideas.

I think it would be more of a punishment for him to make him work at Walmart stocking produce for the rest of his life. There just so happens to be a Walmart along I-30 in Arkansas, one that's about fifty miles from civilization, that would be perfect for this. Order him to either buy or build a 1500 square foot home with a fence around it, give him three cops to watch him and make sure he never goes anywhere unescorted, and let him go to the store every day and put lettuce on the shelf. As long as he has no access to anyone else's money he's really not a threat to anyone. Plus...he can pay taxes!

29. That's just it
Given that cigarettes are contraband (they pretty much have to be smuggled in by staff, who are themselves subject to search now for security reasons) three cigarettes is actually a lot of "money."

But probably more sex does not involve any sort of payment or coercion, so no, they don't have to pay bribes. We have gone from horror stories about prison rape to the idea that all sex between inmates is rape, and that's just not true. I am sure there is much, much more rape at some county jails and state facilities, but the irony is that the BoP is better staffed and has a better budget, so doing federal time is probably better from the inmate's point of view. Some self-identify as gay, and some do not, but there are plenty of inmates having sex and trying not to get caught by officers, probably mainly successfully, though some do get caught.

Then, though more rare, there are the cases when staff are caught having sex with inmates. Seven billion people on the planet, and there are a few thousand who are off limits, but they do it anyway. Must be some sort of strange attraction to khaki.

12. This is the attack which took place in December.
Just to clarify, this is not yet another attack, but the one which was reported but never formally confirmed last December. According to this article it was as suspected, he (Madoff) was beaten by an inmate who believed Madoff owed him money.

24. problem is unless you put everyone into lockdown in segregation
there is no way to protect inmates from each other, they are going to fight each other and victimise each other, its the nature of the beast and without draconian punishments you wont stop it..
