White House extends status of Liberians in US
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is allowing thousands of Liberians living in the United States to remain in the country for an additional year and a half.

A presidential memorandum issued Friday applies to Liberians who fled the country amid years of civil war and who are living in the United States under "deferred enforced departure status."

Their stay was to have expired on March 31, but Obama is directing the Department of Homeland Security to extend it by 18 months.

Large enclaves of Liberians live in states including Rhode Island, New York, Minnesota and the Carolinas.

1. I was surprised

to see that no racist repukes were whining about this extension. You can't tell me that at least a few aren't seething with rage, and it'd be a good opportunity to give a shout-out to the cross-burners in their respective constituencies. I'm glad this extension was issued, as Liberia is still a dangerous place. Providing people safe refuge is one of the great things about our nation, and I'll be highly pissed if people get sent back into harm's way after being granted refugee status.

On edit: check out the responses from Yahoo!News members - an oath keeper & a birther, and neither one addressed the actual news story.

6. I read it as libertarians! Liberians and Librarians are both vastly preferable.

5. Well, if it was up to me, Libertarians would have No status in this country.
