Pelosi: 'No Separate Vote' For Stupak...Or Anybody Else
Brian Beutler | March 20, 2010, 12:09PM

House Democratic leadership has apparently told Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) to go take a hike--and they'll move forward without him, or any other anti-abortion Dems threatening to switch their votes from 'yes' to 'no.'

Just off the House floor moments ago, Pelosi told reporters there will be "no separate vote" on abortion or any other measure.

And Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a leading pro-choice progressive, said they're moving ahead without him. "There's not going to be any deal made with Mr. Stupak...there's been no deal whatsoever. He's been told that his language is not going to be added to the legislation," she told me this morning.

Stupak has been threatening to vote against health care reform legislation for months if its abortion language isn't tightened significantly, and he's claimed repeatedly that upwards of a dozen other Democrats would join him if he doesn't get his way. That'd be enough to kill the bill.

Demand a Vote on the Public Option

Join Congressman Alan Grayson in calling for a vote on the Medicare buy-in.

Read the letter and sign onto the petition today!

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

If we’re going to vote on bills without a public option, we should also vote on the public option.

Our bill (HR 4789) lets anyone buy into Medicare.

We've had lots of debate. Now it's time to vote.

Regards,

Rep. Alan Grayson

2. Are y'all getting why I say I just can't vote for an antiabortion Democrat?
Edited on Sat Mar-20-10 11:51 AM by Warpy
There are some very stark lines in politics that separate reasonable human beings from unreasonable ones and the choice line is that line today, much like the abolitionist line was in the 1850s.

Antiabortionists are not willing to compromise on any issue and will always try to force every issue to be their issue--ending reproductive choice for women.

Men who would be slave owners are the worst human beings among us. Every once in a while, an issue pops up that lets us know who they are.

Choice is that issue.

6. I contributed to Connie Saltonstall last week as soon as her page was up
Saltonstall is probably a bit conservative for my taste, but Stupak has got to go.

11. True, but there's more: Stupak would also toss his poor, rural district overboard on health care.
I totally agree with you, but it's even worse considering the context: He threatens to torpedo health care reform over the issue of abortion, when his district - which I know very well - is desperately in need of it. He doesn't care.

He's got to go, for so many reasons.

13. That's what antiabortion crazy people DO
They don't care about anything beyond pushing women back into slavery.

7. Or any other measure? What happened to the anti-trust exemption?
I don't believe it is in the bill, and was to be voted on separately. I hope that vote still gets a chance, I want to know who says yes or no.

As for you Stupak, take a hike.

15. The repeal to the anti-trust exemption passed the House.
It couldn't be included in the reconciliation bill - it wasn't Byrd Rule compliant, so it's in its own separate bill.

It already passed the House, though I'm wondering if it will get anywhere in the Senate.

16. Thank you , I have read conflicting reports on this, and the Senate
needs more public pressure to pass that measure. Leahy was great to open it up initially, and I hope we hear more about it soon.

17. Emergency: Stop Stupak's Last-Ditch Attempt
URGENT. For US residents only. This page makes it easy to write to your representatives urging that they not allow Bart Stupid-ak to inject his personal morality into the health insurance bill. Abortion is a legal medical procedure. We have already capitulated enough in the current version of the bill which allows stat...es to decide on a state-by-state basis if public funds will be used for abortion. This is over the top already -- women could die without access to abortions in states that will not cover the cost.

18. I can't believe it's 2010 and politicians are STILL debating abortion!
Screwpak must be trying to use abortion to distract from the real issue. But kudos to Speaker Pelosi!
