Iraq Inquiry asks to question George Bush's senior officials
Source: Telegraph UK

Sources in Washington said the inquiry sent out emails "about three weeks ago" to senior officials in Mr Bush's government including, it is believed, the former president himself.

Other requests are understood to have been made to Dick Cheney, Mr Bush's vice-president, Condoleezza Rice, the former secretary of state, Donald Rumsfeld, the former US defence secretary, and Stephen Hadley, an ex-national security adviser – as well as to their deputies and senior assistants.

Members of Sir John Chilcot's panel are believed to be willing to travel to the US to take evidence – almost certainly in private – on the administration's policies between the 2003 invasion of Iraq and 2009.

While the most senior figures are reluctant to give evidence, Washington sources claim about 10 former officials, most involved in the post-invasion period, have agreed to do so.

Not much hoopla at DU about this. It's odd to consider this was all that mattered at DU 7 years ago. Now all that matters is the health care debate. What good is it to trumpet these issues when no one cares after the fact? It's sad really that the site was pretty much about stolen elections and an illegal immoral war yet now it's about passing a health hand out to the crooks at insurance companies who have been ripping us off.

No real results or resolution on these issues going our way. It's a screwy world we're living in. 1 million dead Iraqi men, women and children deserved better. These war criminals should still be held to account. America won't do it. At least the British are asking questions.

4. It matters, it's just been intensely emotional , losing the public option.
If we could adhere to international law, abide by our own laws as well, and hold elected official accountable, perhaps we could save
a future generation from an administration that would LIE and deceive a nation into another needless war. JUST MAYBE!!!

6. It would be nice to see the UK make noise about this....
....since our AG seems more willing to turn the other cheek. A violation of the law from what I understand.

7. One can only hope, but at this point, I'm keeping my eye on Spain.
I like the way they get mad about it! They actually seem interested in justice, we'll see.

5. "almost certainly in private", and not compulsory, means not much will come of it
A few may agree - perhaps those who had reservations at the time, like Richard Armitage. But if all this means is that what they say will be summarised in the report, and perhaps then as "American officials", if will just be background material for it. Even the public appearances in front of the inquiry have been survived by Blair and Brown.

8. with out someone to come and take them away
I don't think they'll bother to answer. They never answered questions here. But I love that this is happening. I didn't hear this before. Thanks for the post.

9. I am sorry that we Americans didn't do better.
We have it in ourselves to be great, but in the past decade we have allowed our fear and weakness to rule our actions.

So many of us opposed the invasions, we stood for peace, we marched and protested and shut down Seattle and many other cities for days at a time. It is so strange to see these mistakes coming and be able to do nothing to stop them. Almost like standing in the way of a freight train.

I have always wondered how all the other countries slid into fascism so easily and now I know.
