Detainee abused at Guantanamo ordered freed

* Posted on Monday, March 22, 2010
By Carol Rosenberg | McClatchy Newspapers

A federal judge on Monday ordered the Pentagon to release a long-held Mauritanian captive held at Guantanamo Bay who was once considered such a high-value detainee that former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld designated him for "special interrogation techniques."

U.S. District Judge James Robertson's ruling was classified, so there was no immediate explanation for why he granted the habeas corpus petition of Mohamedou Slahi, 39. A notation in court files said an unclassified version of the ruling would be made available, but didn't say when.

Slahi is the 34th Guantanamo detainee ordered freed since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that detainees could challenge their incarceration in federal court, but his name was already well known because of investigations into detainee abuse.

Those probes found that Slahi had been subjected to sleep deprivation, exposed to extremes of heat and cold, moved around the base blindfolded, and at one point taken into the bay on a boat and threatened with death. Investigators also found that interrogators had told him they'd his mother and have her jailed as the only female detainee at Guantanamo if he did not cooperate.

8. cheenee-rummy sick freaks
invented horrors that drove people insane, THEY created more terrorism & enemies than they prevented. Bringing the treasonous bat rastards to JUSTICE would do MUCH to alleviate the human need for retribution.
I don't know why the current admin. can't see that.
I feel I HAVE to continue to fight, to continue to push Our Pres., for prosecution of these war criminals & war profiteers..
It won't be over for me, until JUSTICE is SERVED.
To quote Amnesty International,
"The Country I Believe in ..DOESN'T Torture People".

I appreciate Your post. Hold onto Your HOPE!

15. I bet if we handed Cheney over to him and said, "have at it, dude!" he'd probably be satisfied
We should try that approach, anyway.

4. Slahi is one bad dude.
I only hope we're freeing him for a good reason. The undisputed stuff on him is pretty damning.

6. Other than being an 'enemy combatant' I don't believe charges
were ever brought against the man.
How bad is that?

7. This is why torture is bad
Yep, odds are extremely good this guy is guilty of all sorts of things, and may well have some role in the 9/11 plot. He was even arrested and released twice BEFORE 9/11.

Here's more info on him:

http://www.historycommons.org/searchResults.jsp?searchtext=slahi&events=on&entities=on&articles=on&topics=on&timelines=on&projects=on&titles=on&descriptions=on&dosearch=on&search=Go

But he was also tortured with such clearly illegal techniques, and so often, even a US military prosecutor publicly refused to prosecute him, despite acknowledging Slahi was almost certainly a high-level al-Qaeda operative.

This shows how utterly broken the entire system is. Innocents are locked up for years when there's no evidence against them at all, and the guilty go free.

13. How about the constitution, and it's inclusion of treaties as US law?
Lawyer bullshit might be enough for the farcical US legal system, but people paying attention knows that what was done in the name of the United States was criminal, culpable, and still condoned by the current administration.

16. He will probably be liquidated soon after his release.
There could be "word on the street" that he was released because told all.
