Tony Blair in citizen's arrest scare as Brussels journalist tries to detain him over 'war crimes'

A reporter in Brussels has tried to place Tony Blair under citizen's arrest over his role in the Iraq war, it has emerged.
Irish reporter David Cronin, a freelance journalist, put his hand on Mr Blair's arm during the former premier's visit to the European Parliament to discuss the Middle East conflict on Monday.

Mr Blair flinched as Cronin said: 'This is a citizen's arrest', local media reported.

The former Prime Minister's bodyguards quickly pushed Cronin, 38, away. 'You are charged with war crimes,' he said as the bodyguards stepped in, the EUobserver.com said.

Cronin, who works for Inter-Press news agency in Brussels, had intended to ask Mr Blair to go with him to a police station to be charged with committing a 'war of aggression'.

4. That would be great....
but our War criminals (Bush, Cheny, Rumsfeld, et al) are protected by agents of the Secret Service at taxpayer expense. No one could get near any of them. Especially foreign journalists.

6. He needs to get this treatment at every place he goes.
Making them live in a bubble out of fear of imprisonment is a form of imprisonment itself.

14. He is physically unable to do so...
... since the body guards are not going to allow him to "peacefully detain until the police arrive".

15. Article by the guy who tried it:
Why I tried to arrest Tony Blair
Monday, 22 March 2010 21:37

By David Cronin

A short while ago, I got up close and personal with Tony Blair.

As the former prime minister made his way into a packed committee room in the European Parliament, I stepped up to him and laid my hand on his arm. “Mr Blair, this is a citizen’s arrest,” I said.

For a split second, he looked directly at me, treating me to an expression that seemed both blank and quizzical. Then I was pushed away firmly, though not too aggressively, by one of the phalanx of body guards surrounding him. “You are guilty of war crimes,” I shouted after him, adrenaline giving me the kind of high I haven’t experienced in years.

I had prepared a more lengthy speech about how I believed Blair should be prosecuted for authorising the war against Iraq as this involved crimes against peace and the crime of aggression. I had also intended to invite him to accompany me to the nearest police station so that I could file a criminal charge against him.

Blair's protection at the Chilcot Iraq enquiry cost UK's tax payers over £250,000 for the day.
