'I Am Alive': Justice Ginsburg Fires Back at Sen. Bunning's Death Prediction
Source: ABC news

A year after surgery for pancreatic cancer, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg told an audience last week that she is feeling well -- and then took a dig at the senator who had claimed after her surgery that she would only have nine months to live.

"I am pleased to report that, contrary to Sen. Bunning's prediction, I am alive and in good health," she said.

Jim Bunning, R-Ky., made the comments during a private fundraiser on Feb. 21, 2009, when he described Ginsburg's cancer as "bad cancer -- the kind that you don't get better from."

He later apologized in a statement in which he misspelled the Justice's name. "I apologize if my comments offended Justice Ginsberg," Bunning then said.

1. Good for you, Justice Ginsburg
And Sen. Bunning? Would you like another helping of crow? Maybe you could wash it down with a nice Kentuckey borbon.

2. God, Bunning really is an idiot, isn't he?
I guess a few fast balls caught him on the noggin.

3. This woman is a true American hero.
Imagine how hard it was for her to hold out on the court until we could appoint a replacement. She deserves lots of happy and pain free year in the future and I hope she gets them.

I heard a rumor that Jim Bunning is going to die alone and burn in hell. Painfully!

13. Um, she's still on the court
Sotomayor replaced Souter.

Although I expect she'll retire within the next two years along with Stevens.

21. I'm sorry...I thought she had announced that she was retiring already.
I give her even more credit for standing up against the dark side this long.

4. "'IF' my comments offended..."? If? Seriously? That non-apology shoudl be outlawed.
How could predicting the death of a seriously ill person NOT be offensive?

5. "I apologize if my comments offended" so he didn't apologize for acting like an asshole
just that he "offended" Ginsburg. Bunning is such a tool.

17. Well not even that! He apologized if SHE was offended.
Puts the blame on her for being offended rather than on himself for doing the offending.

What a scumbag.

Or some other form of dementia? Seriously - hasn't his own party been trying to get rid of him because of increasingly erratic behavior?

11. I am not rooting for her death
Edited on Wed Mar-24-10 10:53 AM by melm00se
but just as a point of fact: the statistical 5 year survival rate after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer for white females is an overall 4.2% with a maximum survival rate of 16.4% for pancreatic cancer could in it's earliest stage.

make no mistake about it, this is a deadly deadly disease and the odds, over the 1st 5 years, is waaayyy against the patient.

15. She doesn't need an ass to tell her she's going to die. Besides, nobody is a statistic.
Plus, most of the "statistics" are out of date, as they are done on five year studies. They change constantly along with new treatments.

And hooray for that!

25. Pancreatic cancer killed my father
I hereby claim the right to make any kind of similar remark about Jim Bunning and any ailment that may
befall him, or has already.

It's not my style, and I'm a Democrat, so I probably would never do it, but I feel Bunning has, by his
remarks about the death of a sitting member of the Supreme Court, given the green light for any admirer
of said Justice to refer to him in a similar manner.

26. Just wait. If we get a Rethug president, he'll nominate a corporation for SCOTUS justice...
Edited on Wed Mar-24-10 03:05 PM by cascadiance
And that way that "justice" can never die and therefore never be replaced, and will always vote to keep in place the judicial activist notion of corporate personhood.

Don't laugh! We've already got corporation Murray Hill running for congress now!
