Divorce attorney says Dennis Hopper is dying
Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Dennis Hopper is terminally ill and unable to undergo chemotherapy as he battles prostate cancer, his attorney wrote in a court filing.

Attorney Joseph Mannis wrote about the "Easy Rider" star's grave condition in a declaration filed Wednesday asserting the actor cannot be questioned by his wife's attorneys in a deposition.

Hopper, 73, and his wife, Victoria, have been locked in a bitter feud since the actor, director and artist filed to end the couple's nearly 14-year marriage in January.

He weighs barely 100 pounds and was described by his physician Dr. David Agus in the court filing as extremely weak and unable to carry on long conversations.

1. That's sad, I just watched "Hoosiers" the other night.
Liked Dennis as an actor. Always liked Dennis.

12. HE filed. I don't understand it myself, but perhaps he wants to make sure she doesn't get much...
... or apportion more to kids by a previous marriage (if any, I don't know details of his life), or will everything to Pomeranian Rescue -- I don't know why people do what they do.

16. Divorcing her so her claim to his estate is severely limited.
If you try to disinherit a spouse, they can claim a marital elective which I believe is 1/3 of the total estate.

31. His wife's lawyer
has claimed it is Hopper's daughter who is behind the proceedings, not the man himself. The move, if successful, would lower the number of claimants against Hopper's dwindling estate.

It's sad, all around. He's a good actor, and a better artist.

5. Seems like it might be time for the court to appoint a guardian
who is independent of either side and who would get a mental evaluation, something the wife says is at the heart of the case.

If Hopper's got brain mets, that divorce lawyer is SOL.

30. I don't think it matters except as relates to the estate
But that will be an issue after he dies. Frankly, I don't understand why this latest spouse married him in the first place. I certainly wouldn't have gotten involved with an erratic actor who had four (five?), ex-wives.

10. Your work has been an inspiration for many
A true artist.
"Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying."

"If my thought dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's all right Ma, I'm only dying."

A true counter culture hero from a turbulent liberating time.

...Not as good when I read the reason..Not that it wasn't a good reason..I just thought there were others besides that.

A lot of Repubs, from what I understand, refused to vote for McCain because of Palin.

23. You are right. He WAS a Republican until recently just before he got sick. He changed over.
I met him years ago at a book signing he did and was taken aback that he did not match his liberal image and was somewhat arrogant and very conservative. I was pleased that he had taken a look at his past voting and support of Republicans and had issued a statement in support of the Dems and Obama. But that was not too long ago.

Don't always agree with him, and he's made some strange movie choices over the years, but he is truly one of a kind and he's lived an amazing life. I hope he fights his way back.

He was always kind of "out there," (Blue Velvet, which I loathed, comes to mind), but I always respected him, even though I didn't care for a great deal of his work. I mean, so many talented guys died at such young ages, and he's still here with us, even if it's not for much longer.

I too, have a weird appreciation of his work in Texas Chainsaw 2. Truly over the top. lol

36. unfortunately chemo sometimes does things to the brain
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 12:52 PM by pitohui
it says he has stopped the chemo now but it's possible the damage is done

it's easy for us to say "let it go, dude, let her have the $ and remember you w. affection, you chose to spend 14 yrs of yr life w. this woman, you must have loved her at some point and wanted her to be happy..." but once the cancer or the chemo hits yr brain, i just don't know

we can see sitting here that it's stupid-ass to worry about using yr dying breath to snatch money out of your wife's hand but HE can't see it -- and so lawyers get richer
