IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa Gov. Chet Culver came out strongly Thursday in support of the federal health care overhaul plan, saying Americans will support the new law once they understand it better.

Speaking at a news conference hours before President Barack Obama arrived in Iowa City to promote the health care effort, Culver said thousands of Iowans would benefit from the plan.

“I think President Obama has just achieved a historic accomplishment, something that presidents for generations have tried to do,” Culver said. “When Americans hear the real story about what this means to hard-working families in this state and this country, he's going to become even more popular.”

Culver, who later met Obama at the airport in Cedar Rapids, released a fact sheet that claims the federal action would enable 48,600 Iowa small businesses and 187,000 individuals to get assistance in providing and buying health insurance.
