Condom sent to Democrat who voted for health care bill
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minnesota, was one of several members of Congress who reported receiving obscene and threatening letters after voting for the health care reform bill passed by Democrats on Sunday.

But her spokeswoman told CNN that inside one letter received Thursday was a condom, removed from its original packaging.

McCollum's spokeswoman Maria Reppas said Thursday that the congresswoman's district office in St. Paul received the condom in an envelope dated March 23, along with an anonymous typed letter reading: "Betty McCollum you've been dry f***** by the liberal party."

(snip)

Her office also reported receiving part of a shredded American flag doused in gasoline and a typed letter addressed to McCollum, Rep. Keith Ellison, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Sen. Al Franken - all Democrats from Minnesota.

"Each of you receives part of a shredded American flag," the letter read. "It represents Obama and your liberal filth. Open the bag, it's covered in the stench you've brought to our government ... Because of you, we are now a country of dirt, shame, corruption and slime."

2. A shredded American flag?
I thought they didn't want the flag ripped, torn shredded, burned or anything else that would deface it. We've said it over and over again but I'll say it one more time. Fuckin' hypocrites!

17. Also EXTREMELY illegal
Check the penalties for sending hazmat through the mails--especially unmarked hazmat. A shredded flag dipped in gasoline qualifies on two counts: fire hazard, and hazardous to health.

16. Oh, Sorry guys. . .I guess I didn't read the whole thing before replying!
My bad. . .I just stopped at the condom and the note. . . And until it was a "used" one. . .I didn't think it was that bad. . .but of poor taste!

But the rest is more like the REAL threats that have been happening all over. . . and that is ABSOLUTELY NOT FUNNY!

5. Wow - the Right now supports Flag Burning as protest
perhaps they only support it if the flag is burned with an accelerant, and then shredded.

15. Classy.
And "dry f****d"? What does that even mean? Is that like dry humping, where everyone keeps their clothes on and there's no penetration?

I don't get it.

I don't like this sham of a health reform package anymore than the next voter but this is...way beyond. When will they learn their are civilized ways of expressing discontent?

21. What vulgar perverted idiots these stupid bigots are
Stunts like these give you all the information you need to know about the mental capability and intelligence of these people

It scares me that people like this are living among civilized human beings because they obviously have no place being there

I hope karma gets these smelly bigots sometime

22. They were sent rags doused with a flammable liquid? Through the mail?
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 08:07 AM by Solly Mack
A flag becomes little more than rags once shredded.

Wouldn't that be a felony? (using the mail that way/sending a flammable substance...other)

What if someone had been smoking?

27. With the exception of the gasoline, I can't see either of these as criminal
Although the condom doesn't make an awful lot of sense beyond locker-room trash talk, the quoted parts of those letters aren't threats...

30. Against USPS Regulations
http://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_018.htm

343.23 Nonmailable Flammable and Combustible Liquids

When flammable liquids and combustible liquids that are nonmailable under 343.21 or 343.22 and DMM 601.10.13. are found in the mailstream, the procedures in POM 139.117 must be followed if the materials present an immediate threat to persons or property. When there is no immediate threat to persons or property, follow the procedures in POM 139.118.

The following materials are nonmailable:

1. All flammable liquids having a flashpoint of 20° F (–7° C) or below are prohibited from mailing.
2. Gasoline (UN1203) is a flammable liquid that normally has a flashpoint of –50° F. Gasoline is nonmailable under any circumstances.

The Postal Inspector can do something with a fine or something else. You are endangering the workplace of USPS employees.

31. Right, that's why I said "with the exception of the gasoline"
The only part of these letters that seems criminal is the fuel, and even that doesn't strike me as a threat (just a really, really, poorly thought-out political statement).

I agree that the post office should take action against that sender - at the very least a discussion about safety...
