Toyota to Idle Plants in Europe

By YOSHIO TAKAHASHI

TOKYO—Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it will suspend production at its factories in France and the U.K. for at least 12 days in coming weeks due to weak regional demand for its vehicles after a series of global safety recalls.

The suspension coincides with planned production adjustments at two Toyota plants in the U.S. for up to two weeks in March and April, to prevent inventories from building up.

Toyota will halt production from April 6 to April 9 at its plant in France, where it manufactures the Yaris compact, and also plans to idle assembly in late April.

The world's biggest car maker by volume will also stop operations in the U.K. for a total of eight days, from next Monday to Thursday and April 6-9.
