Man accused(arrested) of making threats against Cantor

Washington (CNN) -- A 33-year-old Pennsylvania man has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill House Minority Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Justice Department said Monday.

Norman Leboon of Philadelphia was charged in a two-count complaint with threatening to kill Cantor and his family. Leboon made the threat in a YouTube Internet video sent to Google this month, according to a Justice Department statement.

Neither Cantor nor his family were harmed as a result of the threat, the department said.

"The Department of Justice takes threats against government officials seriously, especially threats to kill or injure others," U.S. Attorney Michael Levy said. "Whether the reason for the threat is personal or political, threats are not protected by the First Amendment and are crimes."

If convicted, Leboon would face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a $500,000 fine, according to the Justice Department.

There damn well better be some arrests of those that threatened Democratic lawmakers!

On edit - pic of the whack job - he's the one on the left.

6. Cantor would have pressed charges.
The Dems did not press charges. it appears Cantor needs
to try to restore himself after the Police Report indicated
the gunshot story--was a random shot not directed at Cantor's
office.

In the Cleaver(spat upon by Teabagger)--two were arrested but
Cleaver did not press charges.

29. the bullet Cantor claimed was fired into his campaign office
that really wasn't his campaign office but the office of a political consulting firm who has Cantor as a client as well as a number of other politiciians and the bullet wasn't fired at the building at all or even on the same block as this office.....but other than that....it was a serious threat to Cantor because he is Jewish.......his alleged reason he is being 'targeted'.

in short: bogus republican hysteria over a bunch of lies they created.

I believe all this is wrong and should be arrested but it seems to be selectively applied. THAT is what I have a problem with.

34. I understand...
What has been going on is totally unacceptable.

The difference is, I think, that he was actually identified, and made an actual death threat.

I don't recall if the person who cut the gas line to that Congressman's brother's home has been found...Or if anyone has been IDd for any of the death threats. If so, then I really think those will be prosecuted as well.

38. Right..the random bullet which had
nothing to do with cantor. I see we're exactly on the same page with this.

I could be wrong but it seems like when this guy threatened cantor he had heard about the stray bullet report that cantor was capitalizing on..not excusing anything but cantor was wrong to say it was a "direct threat on him".

According to the federal complaint against him, Norman Leboon of Philadelphia has admitted making some 2,000 videos that contained threats. A sampling of his "work" reveals rambling incoherent videos that mix pseudo-religious incantations with random warnings and threats. In one video he addresses President Obama, Vice President Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid by name and says, "Your punishment is coming, the swine, it will be severe, and you will beg for mercy to your god, it will be severe, you will know god's swine, god has warned you."

10. The Guy Is Mentally Ill
Norman Leboon, the man now charged with threatening to kill Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was arrested over the weekend, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia Monday.

Leboon made the threat in a YouTube video in which he leveled a variety of offensive and incendiary statements at Cantor and his family.

"My Congressman Eric Cantor, and you and your cupcake evil wife," Leboon said in the video, according to an affidavit. "Remember Eric...our judgment time, the final Yom Kippur has been given. You are a liar, you're a Lucifer."

If convicted, Leboon faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

It appears that Leboon has also been involved in a lawsuit against Verizon regarding their alleged complicity in surveillance of US citizens and has been an active uploader of inflammatory and often anti-semitic videos.

and probably has schizophrenia. The only issue is that the right-wing hate speech can agitate already unstable people. He sounds like there is likely a long trail of mental illness behind him, which we will be hearing about in the next few days. The GOP will milk this for all its is worth.

20. FOLKS READ THIS YOU ARE BEING CONNED.
The absolute putrid statement that the federal government takes threats seriously is ludercous....this guy made over 2000 threats against public figures. He made a threat against President Obama...he wasn't arrested. He made a threat against Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid he wasn't arrested. NOW when he threaten Eric Cantor the little wimpy ass secret service men jumped up and down and took the threat seriously. I am going to contact them and ask them why threatening the president of the United States shouldn't be bothered to be taken seriously and one to a republican is.

39. Man charged in threat to kill Cantor
Source: USA Today

WASHINGTON — The FBI on Monday charged a Philadelphia man with threatening to kill a House Republican leader, the latest outburst against members of Congress in the wake of the health care debate.
According to arrest papers made public by the U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia, suspect Norman Leboon, 33, admitted that he posted a YouTube video warning House Minority Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia that he would "receive my bullets in your office."

Federal officials made the arrest on Saturday, one day after being alerted to the existence of the video, which had been removed from YouTube.

"The Department of Justice takes threats against government officials seriously, especially threats to kill or injure others," Michael Levy, the U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia, said in announcing the arrest. "Whether the reason for the threat is personal or political, threats are not protected by the First Amendment and are crimes."

The obscenity-laced video also mentioned Cantor's wife and children and contained anti-Semitic references. Cantor is Jewish.

Man Who Threatened Rep. Cantor Had Concealed Handgun Permit

http://images.huffingtonpost.com.nyud.net:8090/2010-03-30-leboon.jpg

Norman Leboon--the 38-year-old Northeast Philadelphia man recently charged with threatening the life of House Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA)--was, according to the brother of Leboon's live-in partner, a "giant loon." Leboon was also a concealed handgun permit holder.

As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Peter Leboon was concerned because his brother , who he said began showing signs of mental instability three years ago, had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

"The last time I tried to get him help, we searched the whole house, six or seven of us, we couldn't find the gun," Peter Leboon said. "I found the permit, though, and destroyed it. Whatever happened to that gun, who knows?"

Or as a neighbor told the Inquirer: "For the past two years, he's been off his rocker....I've called the cops plenty of times."
