Obama: 'Core group' of Tea Party movement questions his legitimacy
Source: USA Today

President Obama said many Tea Party followers have "mainstream legitimate concerns," but their movement is built around a "core group" of opponents who call him a socialist and question his citizenship.

Referring back to his presidential campaign, Obama told Matt Lauer of NBC's Today show, "there's some folks who just weren't sure whether I was born in the United States, whether I was a socialist, right?"

He added, "there is a broader circle around that core group, of people who are legitimately concerned about the deficit, who are legitimately concerned that the federal government may be taking on too much." Obama said he hopes to allay these fears as time moves on.

And those core Tea Partiers? "That group we're probably not going to convince," he said.

10. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they welcomed either one.
With all of the Red-Baiting that comes out of their yaps, you would think Andropov or Chernenko vs Reagan was happening all over again.

12. I'm African American and that answer always fascinates me

They hate that anyone , especially a Democrat, after 8 long years, can out slick them. That is what they hate.

If HC, Biden or DK had become President, everything would be smooth sailing and the Teabags would not exist because they are White ???

I just can't buy into that -- after eight long years of totally controlling this country, Rethugs are not in charge.

Is the fact that the President is African American the entire reason they are doing this - I honestly don't think so.

If a part of it is that they didn't realize that an African American is able to outsmart evil White People, that may be because they are stuck on stupid.

Thankfully, there is now a huge majority of Whites that not only supported President Obama, many White Americans have grown to understand that America is a multi cultural country now and they embrace the change.

It was " The CHANGE that they believed in" enough to vote him into office.

The Clinton's/Carters are both White and they were given hell for trying to do some of the exact same things. I was a voter at that time and supported both of those Presidents.

It is chilling that some Die Hards in America have not grown up since that day, but, I hated the way that people were so mean to the Clintons for the HCB and Monica. Everyday it was some mess, just like this mess.

They even called his brother a Hill Billy and Carters lovely young daughter all kinds of cruel names. Just remembered they talked about Chelsea night and day.

So, IMO, Obama is not the Lone Ranger in their rage.

It has happened before.

13. Being a white southerner, I remember well the fear that
the black man will take over. It became really crazy during the civil rights marches.

The whole Socialist label has racial overtones. That goes back to the early labor movement. Blacks and immigrants were the villains to the establishment with their "Socialistic" ways.

Sure any Dem would have been attacked, but the words and images used against Obama, Michelle and their kids reminds me of those bad old days when a Black person better not be in town after dark. Even kids are not to be trusted (they're cute when they are kids, but then they grow up.)

On my veterans' mailing list the hateful language and images really turned me off. I heard terms used that I haven't heard for decades. I told them to fuck off and left the group. I started the group ten years ago. I hated to leave, but I had enough.

14. Thanks for your honest reply

I do understand your feelings.

Perhaps my view is different because African Americans know going
into most situations that we WILL be judged by the color of our skin.

So,our family roots have trained us, for many generations, to believe that we will not allow anything to "turn us around."

That includes Sarah Palin and her gang.

I'm sure you've seen the racist signs, e-mails and statements from some of these nutjobs. Some were posted very recently.
