Bill O'Reilly to Pay Court Costs of Fallen Marine's Father (who sued Westboro Baptist Church)
Source: TVNewser

Newsmax reports FNC's Bill O'Reilly will pay the legal fees for the father of a fallen U.S. Marine who sued members of the Westboro Baptist Church who picketed his son's funeral.

The church garners attention for its views by protesting high-profile funerals. On March 3, 2006, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder died in a non-combat related vehicle accident in Al Anbar province in Iraq.

During the wake that was held after his son's funeral, family members turned on the television to view coverage of the massive procession involving over 1,500 persons. They saw the church members waving signs and protesting the funeral.

Last night on his show, O'Reilly said the mounting legal fees, are "an outrage."

"I will pay Mr. Snyder's obligation," said O'Reilly. "I am not going to let this injustice stand."

1. The legal fees are small compared to the size of the judgment. But credit where credit is due. n/t

152. He has to pay WBC's legal fees. OUTRAGEOUS!
The judgement was overturned by 4th Appeals Court. He is liable for WBC's legal fees. They are trying to get another $96,000 out of him. He was on Mitch Albom program today. If O'Reilly is paying the $16,000, the way I understand it, it would go to WBC.

62. Yeah one good act doesn't make up for a lifetime of being an ass
Also shows that THIS is how far he'll draw the line - EVERYBODY hates the westboro creepy peeps so IMO this is no big deal - maybe is for him that's sad.. lol.. still, i will give credit for him doing this ONE good thing. :eyes:

would be cool if billo wasn't such an egomanic asshole - i doubt that will change - maybe he'll change his perspective one day and if doing this helps him react against some of the crazy, good for him i guess.

111. No kudos from me.
O'Reilly's "Tiller the Baby Killer" past precedes him. Doing a decent thing once doesn't change karma for him or relieve him of responsibility for his part in fomenting the cold-blooded murder of a doctor.

141. Actually I can think of two others
1. He did support the public option (Him and Shep Smith were the only two at Faux)

2. When they first started talking about who would build on the site of 9/11 the odds-on-favorite for getting the contract was talking about using steel from Asia. He did a huge rant about how they should only use steel produced in the US, in places like Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

O'Reilly doing something good for a change? I do agree with him that it's an outrage what they are doing to that marine's family. It wasn't enough that they lost their son and had to endure insults during his funeral and then expect the father to pay for those evil bastards legal fees? That is the most despicable thing I have ever heard. Unbelievable. :grr:

Instead of hiring pickups to throw loose pennies on Phelps' yard, hire a dump truck to dump bags of pennies up against the front door of Fred's house. It'll take DAYS to clear a path.

However, in my book Bill-O is still a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of bullshit! 25. I think it is absolutely terrible but
that's the way the law in this country works. No matter how asinine it protects first amendment rights. And the right can't blame this on the left. What would they say if the tea bags were arrested just for shouting and cussing at someone...THEY WOULD SCREAM FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

I know if I was on that jury, tho, I would have a hard time doing the right thing in this case. I don't know whether I would agree with first amendment rights or agree with the Marines father. A really really hard decision.

Surely, this is one of the signs of the looming apocolypse
Bill O'Reilly does something that I agree with? What's next: George Bush turns himself in as a war criminal?

He's finally done something decent.

I bet he gets credit from Olbermann for it too. Keith will say "Look, it doesn't make up for the other things you've done, and it is to be hoped that by paying these fees you're not trying to imply that the Westboro thugs---as disgusting as they are--don't have the right to free speech. But by paying the court costs that otherwise would fall upon those they victimized, you're being a stand-up guy. Keep it up, Bill! You just might decide you like it!

"Yes, listen up folks, because it may be the first and last time you hear me say this...here's to Bill O'Reilly, today's Best--Person--in the World!!!!"

I'll ignore the fact that Bill would not have whipped out his checkbook had the WBC still been exclusively protesting at the funerals of GAY people. It wasn't til they got the soldiers involved that anyone outside the GLBT commmunity really gave a shit...which is exactly WHY the WBC involved the soldiers. They weren't getting the reaction they wanted when they picketed teh gays.

101. First of all Mr Snyder is not obligated to pay any of phelps's legal fees
Because the appeals court reversed the ruling of the trial court, Mr Snyder, as the losing party in the appeal, is obligated to pay the court costs.

No money, whether it's paid by Snyder, o'reilly, you, me, or anyone else will go to phelps and his gang of assholes.

Why the appeals court reversed the trial ruling, I don't know.

I heard Mr Snyder on the radio this morning saying his appeal has been accepted by the Supreme Court and he expects that it will be heard in spring of 2011. So I'm assuming that the payment of the court costs will be deferred until after the supreme court has ruled. Which means that O'Reilly will not actually be out of pocket the $16k any earlier than that. And maybe never if the supremes reverse the appellate court. So let's not be too hasty in giving any credit to this asshat. Believe me he has figured that out. And even if he does have to pay, the money will actually be paid by Fox and they will get their money back ten fold in free publicity for billo. They will be bragging this up for months.

If 1000 people each paid 16 bucks we could avoid all the smug self congratulation that is going to arise from this. I'll offer right now to pay ten share ($160) if someone wants to organize a fund.

take a moment and say "thank you."

The WBC is a bunch of miscreants, and I find them to be some of the most revolting groups that claim a place in humanity, I also believe the law is the law, and if the Appeal overturned the decision, then that's the way it goes.

This act will not change my opinion of him overall, but he deserves to get credit for this, it is a very decent thing for him to do; might be the only decent thing he's ever done, but I will readily admit, I am impressed with this.

Same for the other conservatives out there.

Because that is still what this is really all about. Would Bill make the same offer if this was the funeral for a gay individual? Would this story have as much coverage? No. They have been performing these protests for several years. And only now, when they've moved on to military funerals, have folks like Bill starting to show disgust.

Just the thought of Billo, makes my blood boil.

BUT...this time (maybe a once in a lifetime thing?), Mr. O'Reilly is doing the correct thing.

I will say thank you...and I hope that other common sense Americans can come to together to
assist Mr. Snyder.

Bravo...Now, about this court and the judgement they were "legally" to make? Time for some changes?

I am glad he has taken up this particular cause, particularly for a grieving family.

And it just goes to show you that people of various ideologies can be united in opposition to the vile behavior of the Phelpses.

153. This group here tries to help the families of the soldiers too:
They will show up at the funerals when the assholes from Westboro try and protest.

Patriot Guard Riders Mission Statement

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you. We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

175. ZERO credit. If it were honorable we never would have heard about it.
The public announcement on his own show is totally tasteless self-congratulation. & 16K is a dirty crumb to a man who made himself rich off of hate in the USA working for the PR dept. of right wing of the Republican Party. Without him and FOX there might not never have been a funeral (an Iraq invasion) in the first place.

190. I know this is an upopular position but I agree with the judge's ruling
If you bring a lawsuit and it is thrown out of court, you are responsible for paying the court fees of the person or entity you sued. That is just a way of discouraging frivolous law suits and I agree with it. The judge threw out the case because it had no merit. No has a right not to be offended, no matter how nasty, as long as the speech is not actually defamatory. There is rightfully a very high bar for defamatory speech. Free speech is more important than anyone's sensibilities. I am a free speech absolutist. While the Westboro Baptist Church says a lot of nasty things, they have every right to their speech, as distasteful as it may be, even if they picket funerals of soldiers. As long as they are on public property, there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about it, except to counter their protests with other protests, the way people do at KKK rallies.
