US Navy plane crashes in Arabian Sea

MANAMA, Bahrain -- A U.S. Navy aircraft crashed in the Persian Gulf region on Wednesday and one of the four crew members was missing, the military said.

Search and rescue efforts were under way, the U.S. Navy said in a statement. Three crew members were rescued.

The E-2C Hawkeye, which is primarily used to detect incoming aircraft with its 24-foot diameter radar, crashed in the North Arabian Sea after the it "experienced mechanical malfunctions," the statement said.

The plane was used for command and control functions and operated from the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1. Wow! You don't hear of Hawkeyes crashing.For a long time the heaviest plane that landed on carriers

...there's a few from the '60s where a C-130 lands and takes off from a carrier.

7. These things circle the Norfolk/VB area a lot and have a very low tone. You can hear them before
you can see them. A very distinctive sound.

8. My hope is that they find the missing crew member ASAP.
They also have to get remote submersibles there to either secure or destroy the crypto gear and publications on board. These things are open windows on what we know, and more importantly how we know tactical situations.
