Ariz. governor signs bill authorizing health suit
Source: Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill giving her authority to skirt the state's Democratic attorney general and file a lawsuit challenging federal health care legislation.

Brewer signed the legislation on Thursday after requesting last week that lawmakers approve it.

Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat, angered Republicans last week by declining to join more than a dozen other states in suing to block the health care overhaul bill signed by President Barack Obama.

Republicans say the federal legislation is unconstitutional in part because it requires people to purchase private health insurance. Goddard and other Democrats say a suit would be unlikely to succeed and thus a waste of taxpayer money.

It wasn't immediately known when Brewer planned to use her new authority to file a lawsuit.

14. What if the government drafted you to give your life so Blackwater could profit?
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 02:40 AM by No Elephants
The key is government action to satisfy a compelling public need (national "defense") versus government action that resuts in profit to private companies. Think about being drafted by the government to work for Blackwater, so Blackwater could make a profit from your death vs. being drafted by the government to die in the U.S. military.

ETA: This post is not intended to say these lawsuits are winners, only to address your example.

3. For the 10,000th time I wish Obama had tagged someone else to head up DHS
Instead of tagging Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano to head up the DHS, he should have found someone else and not left the state in the hands of the likes of Brewer.

5. Wow, these idiots really are determined to file
these frivolous lawsuits. Not to mention Georgia wanting to impeach their AG because he's not stupid and an actually knows the law and refuses to play along with such shenanigans with tax payers money.

7. They're Only Digging Their Own Grave On This.......
when the taxpayers of the state realize that they are frivolously spending the taxpayers money - and these lawsuits don't go anywhere - those Repugs that are pushing them will be remembered at the polls.

The only thing I can think of why they are doing this is because it will take a long time to run its course through the courts. It will always be in the news. And there is a slight chance that it might make it to SCOTUS - where they feel that SCOTUS is on their side - thanks to GWB.

15. What????
Who do you think elected the current crop of idiots in the Arizona legislature? The coyotes? It was the taxpayers. If the suit is tossed they won't hold Brewer or her group of clowns responsible, the entire blame will be put onto the federal judiciary.

Now, I know personally that not all Arizonans are moronic asshats, but unfortunately the majority of them are. And it's the majority that gets people elected into office.

I lived in Tucson from 1997-2005.
