'Long way to go' in taming US joblessness: White House
Source: Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States has "a long way to go" in taming its stubbornly high unemployment rate, despite positive jobs creation news last week, top White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers said on Sunday.

"We've got a long way to go. We've inherited a terrible situation, the most pressing economic problems since the Great Depression in our country," Summers told CNN television's "State of the Union" program.

Summers called efforts to bring down the high unemployment, which has been stuck for months at 9.7 percent, the "preoccupation" of President Barack Obama's administration.

"There's a great deal we've got to do, and we've got to do it with all of the energy that we can," Summers said.

"It is the president's preoccupation to put people back to work," he said. "That's what the legislation he signed into law -- to give incentives to businesses to hire people who've been out of work -- was all about.

on DU..they want you to think the 80,000 of the temp and part time jobs this month mean the recession is over!!

shhhh..just roll your eyes ...and put them on ignore.

there were approx 80,000 real full time employment jobs gained ..the rest were part time and temp census jobs./..those are not jobs with any security and they are not equivalent to jobs that have been lost in the past 3 years....that is nothing to cheer about when we have over 8 million Americans who can't get jobs!

12. Can you imagine that 700 billion dollars going into a new green infrastructure and
towards fixing roads and bridges? We could have done it all, and the country would have both put people to work and had something of value to show for it. But that wouldn't have made the piggies richer.

11. The whole problem with this White House is that they want to
fix joblessness in such a way as to not interfere with corporate profits, i.e., bringing jobs back from China and India. Same way they want to fix health care but only in such a way as to not interfere with corporate profits. Which is to say not at all. The only solutions they see to anything are ones that don't interfere with corporate profits. And since corporations are pretty much the root cause of virtually all our economic problems, nothing is really going to get properly and decisively solved.

13. Would Obama support a Constitutional Amendment for publicly financed elections?
Anyone heard him say anything on that topic?

I don't think that we can make much progress without it.

26. No, because that would be the biggest threat to corporate profits in history. And we
know who Obama gets his marching orders from.
