The house was shaking like a toy in a giant's hand and transformers were exploding on the telephone poles outside. Woke up from a dead sleep sure we were being nuked.

Long, slow rocking... definitely over a minute long...
I think my cat felt it too. She was acting weird and complaining all day. I let her out at about 3. She came back about ten minutes after the quake ended.
I've noticed in the past my cats (at least) don't notice a quake unless it's 4.0 or over.

|
The only thing that I noticed were the chimes for my doorbell. They just kept chiming. I walked over and held them thinking I would call someone to fix them tomorrow
Then we left and went to dinner at the neighbors directly in back of us. They said their house was shaking. They definitely knew it was an earthquake. We didn't feel it at all.
Our house is retrofitted but we should have felt it more that that ~
Just talked to my cousin five blocks away. He said he felt like he was in a rocking chair. Rolling back and forth. He said they were all dizzy.
I have been in many earthquakes but I have never been dizzy.

The fish are now starting to settle down, lucky thing that there was a lid on the tank. And of course, the cats and the bird only started freaking out after the tremor started. Nothing fell, just did a little dancing and made some noise. This house is sooo laid back.

Where I was it was a wide rolling sensation. I could hardly tell what I was feeling except that things were swinging and my husband felt it more strongly because he was in his hospital bed. If you are standing you sometimes do not feel as much shaking. I went and stood by him until it passed. It lasted a long time, comparatively.
For us, it was not like the Northridge quake which was like being pounded, hard from beneath. I understand they have upgraded it to a 7.2, epicenter in Mexico. Fortunately the epicenter was in a place that was not heavily inhabited so the damage was not as bad as it could have been. It was like the Northridge quake in the sense that some areas felt severe shaking and some did not. Some sustained damages, and some, like us just suddenly became wide awake.;)
The last time I felt a quake that moved like this, it was a big one way out at sea in the 80s. Let us hope that other than the inevitable small aftershocks it will remain still. My cats barely signified on it, but they blame us for them anyway and if we don't show fear, they generally don't get scared. Just annoyed with us.
