South Africa: police use barbed wire to separate whites and blacks

Racial tensions flared as police were forced to use barbed wire to separate a crowd of hundreds of blacks and whites outside the court where the two alleged killers of the South African far-Right leader Eugene Terreblanche appeared for the first time.

Echoing the divisions of apartheid, whites were singing parts of the national anthem that are in Afrikaans and that date to the apartheid era, while blacks retaliated with the new version containing Zulu choruses.

Police, armed with rifles and riot shields, rushed in to separate the two groups when a middle-aged white woman sprayed an energy drink on the black group, sparking a scuffle and prompting an officer to call for help. The two groups were contained using barbed wire.

Jacob Zuma, the president, has appealed for calm, with the ruling African National Congress calling on all leaders to avoid inflammatory statements.

Mr Terreblanche's murder, by two workers who have allegedly confessed to the killing over a wage dispute, has stirred up simmering racial tensions in the country, as it prepares to host the World Cup.

Supporters of Mr Terreblanche, 69, who was once convicted of beating a black farm worker so badly the man was left brain damaged, and his Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging movement, better known as the AWB, had described his death as a "declaration of war".

i heard on NPR this morning some woman interviewed in the crowd screaming about a "declaration of war"...I was just like, WTF?

FIFA had a lot of reservations about putting a World Cup in continental Africa...I hope these folks wake the hell up and don't prove FIFA right before the games even start...

10. you can't expect people to keep turning cheeks
this murderous bastard reaped exactly what he sowed and i won't ever shed a tear from him. newsflash: you can't oppress people for centuries and expect them to love you. as for the people who murdered him, they will also reap what they sowed.

11. Terreblanche deserves no more pity than Eichmann.
His ideology is genocidal at its core, and he has the blood on his very own hands that goes along with it - no empty talk from the AWB. The Afrikaners should realize just how "good" they have it, retaining the spoils of their previous dominance. In the blink of eye, the "multi-racial South Africa" could vanish, to be replaced by a Republic of Azania that would treat whites as colonialist settlers.

13. What was "Mandela's South Africa?" Mandela supports the ANC now and forever.
Liberals (not saying you) often serious misunderstand Nelson Mandela, thinking he was a Gandhian pacifist or Western-style liberal. He was not and is not.

He advocated the armed revolutionary struggle to overthrow fascist apartheid, and forged an alliance with the socialist countries and domestic communists to get the task accomplished. It was no peaceful struggle in any sense. There should be no historical revisionism.

The "law and order" of apartheid was the law and order of Hitler, of Mussolini, of Franco. The peace of the grave. South Africa is freer now than it ever has been.

Mandela fully supports the president and the ANC/COSATU/SACP liberation alliance. I do too. He fully supports its program for land reform and deepening the national democratic revolution.

16. Mandela supported Zuma actively against Zuma's opponents.

I do not understand what is so difficult about understanding that Mandela supports his party comrade Zuma. Mandela supports the liberation alliance as the absolute keystone of continuing the revolutionary transformation, and he is right. COPE, "Democrats" and others are right-wing counterrevolutionaries.

Here Mandela is wearing a t-shirt with Zuma's image:

Mandela after being liberated with South Africa Communist Party leader Joe Slovo. He knew who his closest allies were.

And Mandela never forgot who supported the oppressed of South Africa while the U.S. was the friend of apartheid.

Of course Mandela supports Zuma!

19. right... because Mandela and Mbeki's presidencies were defined by socialist revolution...
That is why they kept Trevor Manuel in the finance portfolio for 13 years.

Zuma is an illiterate criminal who only for the indifference of a white judge isn't in prison,

20. I didn't say that.
They were to be defined by national democratic revolution, not socialist revolution. It's the COSATU and SACP that want to eventually advance to the socialist revolution, but that is not the ANC program. The ANC includes capitalists and advocates of economic liberalism in its ranks, as it is a broad united front organization. The SACP has been well-represented in each cabinet, but there are some rightists as well.

14. The intruders
came to steal, murder and make life almost unbearable for millions of black people, yes we mourn the death of all of Gods children, but where was the tears while people of his ilk murdered women and children with out any punishment. The poor people with mineral riches beyond our imagination, those minerals were stolen so the white intruders could live a life of comfort, while the blacks lived in poverty and fear.I believe God almighty will be a just God and the unjust will be punished. All over the planet earth where men of ill will have stolen and murdered the innocent in order to live the good life none will be spared.Something to think about tonight before you retire.

18. The Boers have suffered a lot
I am not saying this to excuse what they did but they've got a circle the wagon mentality.

Long odds for those people, aren't represented by the current rulers of South Africa.

Nor is Zuma going to go for an open war,the Zulus were always a tad too close to the original group of sickos who ran the place pre-apartheid.

As for Terreblanche......he had it coming. What else is there to say?If he wanted to live, like any killer whose managed to "murder" someone and get away with it-he got cocky and he got stupid.

God had his justice.
