Vatican says pope target of ‘hate’ campaign

Blames allegations of abuse cover-up on groups with anti-Catholic agenda

By FRANCES D'EMILIO

updated 2 hours, 10 minutes ago

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican heatedly defended Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, claiming accusations that he helped cover up the actions of pedophile priests are part of an anti-Catholic "hate" campaign targeting the pope for his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage.

Vatican Radio broadcast comments by two senior cardinals explaining "the motive for these attacks" on the pope and the Vatican newspaper chipped in with spirited comments from another top cardinal.

"The pope defends life and the family, based on marriage between a man and a woman, in a world in which powerful lobbies would like to impose a completely different" agenda, Spanish Cardinal Julian Herranz, head of the disciplinary commission for Holy See officials, said on the radio.

Herranz didn't identify the lobbies but "defense of life" is Vatican shorthand for anti-abortion efforts.

Also arguing that Benedict's promotion of conservative family models had provoked the so-called attacks was the Vatican's dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano.

"By now, it's a cultural contrast," Sodano told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. "The pope embodies moral truths that aren't accepted, and so, the shortcomings and errors of priests are used as weapons against the church."

What a scumbag! The only "moral truth" is that this Pope protected pedophiles.

29. he never should have been Pope. He was head of the Inquisition,
Edited on Tue Apr-06-10 09:05 PM by roguevalley
he was the pope's shit stick, that is, he did all the beat downs for JP II and he was a soldier in the army for Hitler. He may have had to be a Hitler youth but he had a choice to be in the army and he didn't turn it down. He's the worst thing ever. Maybe it was a little joke about 'Is the Pope Polish?' but "is the pope a nazi?" turns the stomach more than usual. My great grandpa would split a gut.

My condolences to every Catholic on this list who is good and loves their faith. This must be so hard. But remember, you are the church. This guy is just a passing phase.

8. Yes, and they compared it with racist anti-Semitism already.
Their propagandists are clueless if their goal is to actually win public opinion outside the hard core of the church.

We could really be seeing the undoing of the church...

I hope you are right about that.

Many worthy causes, from women's rights to saving ecosystems, would benefit from the destruction of this church.

36. You raise a good point.
The vacuum caused by the disarticulation of Catholicism in the US could be filled by things just as bad or even worse than right-wing Catholicism. There must be a progressive alternative. Ideally, the Catholic church would be captured from within for liberation theology and truly embrace social justice. Short of that, alternatives must emerge forcefully, both secular and religious.

25. So the pope thinks HE'S a victim?
Not the children who were molested by the priests of whom he's apparently complicit in the cover up?

Not the women whom his institution considers second class citizens?

Not the pro-choicers his institution makes a special effort to condemn every election?

Not the scientists who were condemned because they discovered the Vatican's positions were wrong (i.e.-Galileo and other victims of the Inquisition)?

Not the victims of the Crusades of which the Vatican was complicit?

Give me a break!!

26. You wish, Johnny Rat
The Modern Church has rarely shown the willingness to do what it demands it's followers do: reflect, repent, and restore. It was bad enough when the previous pope merely neglected the abuses, but you, Benedict, have your hands DIRTY, personally.

You Johnny, will probably end up like Julius II, the man who built St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and all it's wonders, only to ignore the fact that many throughout the world where getting sick of the corruption, especially a former priest named Martin Luther. We are nailing the 95 theses to your door, Johnny, your move.

28. "Hate what is evil..." Romans 12:9
I'm dissapointed in this church because I thought they finally learned that they needed to be open about their pedophile problems. I knew they'd still have pedophile problems but at least they promised to be more open about it and they promised to care about the victims. Now we see that is no longer the case. Truly, what we are seeing from the vatican is nothing but evil. This is rotten and sad.

every few days we hear new.."old stories".
.New incidents of the Pope's refusal to deal with this in one way or another.
More examples seem to follow, and more denials follow..

These old men can say whatever they want...It just won't work this time..
