D.A. takes on Wisconsin sex ed law
Source: United Press International

MADISON, Wis., April 7 (UPI) -- A district attorney in a rural county in Wisconsin has warned teachers they could be prosecuted if they comply with a state law on sex education.

In a letter to school districts March 24, Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth said the law "promotes the sexualization -- and sexual assault -- of our children," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The law, which takes effect in the next school year, requires sex-education classes to provide age-appropriate information and to instruct teenagers on condom use, and bans abstinence-only sex education. Schools are not required to offer sex education and parents can opt out for their children.

In his letter, Southworth, a Republican, urged districts to shut down sexual education courses, giving students anatomy lessons as part of the science curriculum. He warned teachers who obeyed the law could be charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors.

2. Why can't democrats attacking the GOP's war on intelligence when they pull crap like this
Seriously, threatening to prosecute teachers for telling kids about condoms, what is this the 14th century where people can be put on trial and burned at the stake for being a heretic just because of questioning the rule of theocracy and some of it's laws that aren't based on logic?

20. The issue seems to be a conflict with an already existing law
Minors cannot legally have sex in Wisconsin. I'm not sure how often or if it is prosecuted, but teaching children how to have sex essentially "contributes to the delinquency of a minor" by instructing them in how to break the law.

The thing to do is legalize sexual activity of minors.

9. Shows the fearful control that male-supremacist religion has over human sexuality . . .
and its direct effect even on adult minds!

These adults would rather have control over their children that let their children

have information about normal human sexuality that would keep them safe!

10. Don't just blame Republicans; blame cowardly "Democrats"...
"Schools are not required to offer sex education."

Per Wikipedia, WI has a Democratic-controlled Assembly and Senate and a Democratic governor (well, I already knew that last one...But I wanted to make sure.)

Why the fuck would Democrats allow schools to opt out of educating children? The parental opt-out, I can grudgingly accept (though in the wake of Constance McMillen, I think these children need exposure to ideas that their family shelters them from), but this is a sell-out to religious crazies and other reactionary interests.

11. As someone great once said...
"Conservatives say teaching sex education in the public schools will promote promiscuity. With our education system? If we promote promiscuity the same way we promote math or science, they've got nothing to worry about."

Cutting his funding and staff should get some of that extra time off his hands.

Sex education is not about teaching kids how to have sex. Millions of years of evolution have taken care of that. You could go without telling young people how all the stuff below the belt works, and they would still figure out how to bump those uglies. Once the hormones start going the drive will take over.

What sex education is REALLY about is having the ability to make INFORMED CHOICES once you understand your own biology. Young people need to know that there are STD's -- they need to know that 'pulling out' is NOT an effective means of birth control.

Sex education is empowerment for young people, especially women who literally carry most of the burden.

Do you want to know how well abstinence only programs work? Check out Bristol Palin -- the poster child of right wing education policies.

On edit: Age appropriate sex education is also the best defense against sexual abuse of children (an appropriate topic to bring up at this time) -- again, its about empowerment. Ignorance helps no one.

19. I find this decision ridiculous, but I laugh at his last name.
Add "less" to his last name...Scott SouthWORTHLESS!!!!

His anti-sex mentality would be much more suitable below the Bible Belt. Y'know, in states with higher rates of teen pregnancy and divorce and other sexual deviations from morality. Hence, the combination of the words South and Worth.
