BOSTON —

State Police searched the South Boston coastline for the niece of U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, who disappeared after leaving school early.

Crystal Shaughnessy, 15, lives with the congressman and his wife and daughter in South Boston and is a student at Boston Latin School. She reportedly left school shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Police searched the beach and water off Carson Beach and Castle Island. Shaughnessy was wearing a lime-green hooded sweatshirt and black pants. She weighs about 95 pounds, has blue eyes and brown hair.

Lynch’s 9th Congressional District includes Braintree, Milton, Randolph, Canton, Stoughton, Holbrook and Brockton.

I hope she's okay, but if they're searching along the beach and in the water, it doesn't sound good.

1. I thought it took 24 hrs
I thought there was a 24 hr waiting period before a person was considered missing unless there was evidence of foul play. I read of no evidence of foul play. There was no date on the article so I assume it was yesterday at 2:00 pm she went missing. I think it's great that they are searching for her, but this reeks of special attention for a congressman.

23. that's somewhat mythological
remember, this is america. there is no one universal rule for when a "missing person" is considered missing.

laws, dept. policies, etc. vary greatly

But there are some pretty unpleasant comments on this thread.
Considering it started off with news of a missing child, one of the most terrifying and sympathy provoking events imaginable, at least by my standards, was it really necessary to impugn the intelligence and attitudes of other posters, as well as the motivations of the cops and the Congressman?
Just asking.
(on edit..sorry, I meant to post this at the end of the thread.)

17. If they're searching the beach and water, that sounds a little like they suspect something.
Besides, there's only a 24 hr waiting period for adults. Minors can be reported missing immediately.

6. Lynch is considered a conservative by Massachusetts standards,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Lynch_%28politician%29

Lynch is considered a conservative by Massachusetts standards, but moderate-to-liberal by national ones. He has a pro-life voting record and he received a 25% pro-choice score from NARAL in 2006.<8> He is also strongly pro-labor and has focused on bringing manufacturing jobs to his district.<9>

He is currently a member of the House Financial Services and Government Reform Committees.

Lynch has focused on trade policy as a politician.<10> He is a co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus.<11>

In March 2010, Lynch stated that he would join Republicans in opposing Health Care Reform until "they put reform back in the health reform bill."<12>

9. thanks for that info! We're new to Boston, and I didn't know much about him...we

went to a Town Hall last year where he presided, and I can still remember his telling us that he paid $248/mo for a family of four for health insurance.

By Globe Staff

The 15-year-old niece of US Representative Stephen F. Lynch, who sparked a police search when she disappeared after leaving her Boston high school on Wednesday has been found, Boston Police said.

Crystal Shaughnessy was found this morning in East Boston, said Officer Eddy Chrispin, a Boston Police spokesman. He said no further details were available.

Police searched last night for the girl between Carson Beach and Castle Island in South Boston. Boston Police said she had last been seen leaving Boston Latin Academy at about 1:45 p.m.

By "no further details were available," they probably mean, "there's something embarrassing we're keeping secret."

it was easy to fear the worst. So, it was a teenager just not showing up for curfew. Good.

21. It looks like Lynch suspected his daughter was out partying on the beach...
The 15-year-old niece of U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch was found today in East Boston and is home with family after going missing yesterday, authorities said.

<snip>

Wilson said authorities searched Carson Beach, Castle Island and other areas around South Boston late into last night. He said interviews continued through 4 a.m. today.

State police arrested 14 people, ages 17 to 23, on Carson Beach yesterday for charges of underage alcohol possession, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and other offenses, Wilson said.

27. THIS we didn't see, right?
'going missing during a region-wide warm weather high school skip day yesterday, authorities said.'

MIGHT have helped our thinking/angst. I would have left school early in such circumstances.
