Report: Bride, 13, dies of bleeding(Yemen)
Source: MSNBC

SAN'A, Yemen - A 13-year-old Yemeni girl has died of injuries to her genitals four days after a family-arranged marriage, a human rights group said.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in Yemen and has drawn the attention of international rights groups seeking to pressure the government to outlaw child marriages. Legislation that would make it illegal for those under the age of 17 to marry is in serious peril after strong opposition from some of Yemen's most influential Islamic leaders.

The 13-year-old girl from Hajja province, northwest of the capital, died on April 2, four days after her marriage to a 23-year-old man, said Majed al-Madhaji, a spokesman for the Sisters Arab Forum for Human Rights. A medical report from al-Thawra hospital said she suffered a tear to her genitals and severe bleeding.

Authorities detained the husband.

The Yemeni rights group said the girl was married off in an agreement between two men to marry each other's sisters to avoid having to pay expensive bride-prices. The group said that was a common arrangement in the deeply impoverished country.

3. It reminds me, of a bible story. the villagers wanted to sample the foreighners.
So, he offered his daughters. Who died scratching the door to escape rape till death. To shield the equivalent of samaritans.

not that it makes it any less horrible for the daughter.

14. Here is the passage from the contemporary english translation
Gen 19:4 Before Lot and his guests could go to bed, every man in Sodom, young and old, came and stood outside his house
Gen 19:5 and started shouting, "Where are your visitors? Send them out, so we can have sex with them!"
Gen 19:6 Lot went outside and shut the door behind him.
Gen 19:7 Then he said, "Friends, please don't do such a terrible thing!
Gen 19:8 I have two daughters who have never been married. I'll bring them out, and you can do what you want with them. But don't harm these men. They are guests in my home."
Gen 19:9 "Don't get in our way," the crowd answered. "You're an outsider. What right do you have to order us around? We'll do worse things to you than we're going to do to them." The crowd kept arguing with Lot. Finally, they rushed toward the door to break it down.
Gen 19:10 But the two angels in the house reached out and pulled Lot safely inside.
Gen 19:11 Then they struck everyone in the crowd blind, and none of them could even find the door.

34. There is another passage that is being intermixed in his description
its a similar situation except the daughter is in fact abused until death and left on the doorstep dead in the morning.

I think. I'd have to research it and don't have time at the moment.

48. You have your bible stories all mixed up. Lot's daughters didn't die.
They got Lot drunk and committed the sin of incest with him.

You're thinking of the concubine. Her death caused the major outrage which led to the war between the tribes.

And God considered him to be the only one decent enough to spare from his wrath? That's a funny book.

37. TY for the clarification. I actually have a (now more distant) friend who snarled that we...
... "Should nuke the whole region and let God sort 'em out" in reference to Iraq and Afghanistan. And she looked like such a nice grandma, too. Her husband, otoh, shocked me for another reason -- several years into Dubya's admin he said "They're evil. I've never believed this about another administration in my life, but They. Are. Evil." And he was pushing 80 and we'd never discussed politics before.
:wow: both times.

Anyway, there was a kind of dramatic amount of cultural speculation and ignorance going on; I'd need to do more research before I'd hazard a guess about FGM in Yemen, for instance. As for the agreement of the young men to marry each other's sisters to avoid the bride-price, whatever we think of the practice, when women are chattel it's not unheard-of. Outlawing bride-price would help, though that's not usually too successful. Also tribal peoples tend to marry the girls off shortly after puberty.

I think FGM is heinous and should be suppressed with the full force of the law, but I don't remember that being part of the article about this case.

Pushing the age of marriage up can often be accomplished by making it advantageous to families to keep their girls in school. Keeping girls in school shifts the culture a whole lot. Soft diplomacy.

38. yes the bastard young husband...
apart from her being underage, you would think if he had a heart or even any family values, he would want her to stay alive to bear children for him or at least satisfy his sexual desires for a while. The bleeding was the result of repeated intercourse and surely he had seen and should have worried about the first signs.
I am glad he was arrested but I also agree that international pressure should be brought on these "Wahabi= Sadsi= Benladen) Muslims to change their laws and protect the girls.

44. Two things will: schools for girls, and making it advantageous for their parents to send them
Greg Mortensen's "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time" makes a good case for this, although he doesn't build girls-only schools, he always has them firmly in mind. The book is a good read.

Also, several years ago I read about one aid group in the ME region who figured out that they could keep girls coming to school by bribing their families with cooking oil for good attendance.

Cooking oil -- something extremely cheap in the West, always available to us, and in the name of cutting calories we keep trying to NOT use it. Among the poor of the world it is an absolute necessity, very expensive for them, and in the name of cutting costs they are sometimes sold oil that is so adulterated it makes them sick and sometimes kills them.

This aid group let it be known that each girl who had perfect attendance in school every week would be given a container of oil to take home. Every week: perfect attendance, a ration of oil for her family. It worked like a charm.

Didn't save the article, sorry, no link, I was just dazzled by their brilliance and I remember this.

Why girls' schools? Population studies have shown that in cultures where girls are illiterate they typically have about 8 babies in their reproductive years. Girls who attain even a 4th-grade level of education cut that in half.

Why girls' schools? It opens up a world beyond their village and shows them possibilities they might never have considered. What Mortensen found out was that boys who were sent beyond their villages to get an education seldom returned, but that girls almost invariably did return, bringing the benefit of what they had learned back home. Mortensen's villages attained midwives and teachers, especially. Respect for women and their place in the scheme of things has risen considerably.

Could go on, but must go.

As the number of dead girls and handless boys will testify in those areas where the Taliban have reasserted control.

50. This girl's death will most likely be ruled accidental too
If the husband is even charged in the first place. And at any rate, I don't think he meant to kill her, but I also don't think he had her health as a major concern.

I wonder how much sex education these men have. If they are going to authorize marriages to young girls like this they need to teach the men about "safe sex" in the sense of sex that doesn't hurt or damage the child brides.

I had a friend who I shared a dorm suite with. She lost her virginity one night. the guy left and she went into the bathroom. I got worried about her after about 20 minutes and knocked on the door. She told me to come in. The bathroom was awash in blood. long story short, we called 911. She had some weird condition/malformation that led to her hemorrhaging when her hymen was busted.

in islam a dowry is payment for the use of the womans sex organs.. in all of my research of thar area, i really didn't find much to indicate women were considered even human, they were considered property, a thing entirely owned,.. the Prophet considered them defective and ignorant, the cause of all mens problems. the first revered scholar of islam said that if Virtue contained 1000 points and a women had a man to run every aspect of her life and beat her regularly she might acquire 1 point of virtue during her life. when the angels gave Mohammad a tour of heaven and hell he said hell was mostly populated by women.

Nonie Darwish said that half of all Muslims suffered from Stockholm syndrome.. verifying my own suspicions

i doubt her husband would have her clitterious removed while she was still that young.. maybe after she eas older and he had replaced her with a fresh child.. might just use her as a slave, but even then he would probably pimp her out as a prostitute.. a Mutah

41. Well that's a wonderful display of near total ignorance.
Dowry is what the bride brings to the home (provided by the husband) in order that it is properly kitted out: linen, carpets, cooking utensils, etc.

Bride Price is what the husband pays to the bride's family to compensate for the loss of her labour to the family, and also to demonstrate that he is capable of supporting a family.

In both cases the point is/was to ensure that a new houshold is a self supporting entity that is not reliant on external charity for survival.

Where FGM is practiced, the husband does not perform the procedure, or cause it to be done. He simply won't take a bride on which the procedure hasn't been done. The practice is actually carried out by the women of the bride's family or a female elder. The point of the practice is to prevent ones property being inherited by another man's offspring.

The logic behind practices such as these, might well be extremely twisted by today's standards, but when viewed in the light of the cultures from which they arose, that logic is internally consistent. The vast majority of problems arise when traditions are continued purely for the sake of maintaining tradition.

"Snip...Nonie Darwish presents an insider's look at Sharia and examines how radical Muslim laws are destroying the Western world from within. Living under Sharia law for the first thirty years of her life,a virtual slave to Islamic law, Darwish never questioned or challenged her rights--or dared to even think about the validity of Sharia laws. She didn't try to examine what Sharia was, how it came about or why she followed it. "This is Allah's law," she was told, and she knew what awaited those who questioned Allah's law.."

there is a Fatwa for this brave woman's head on a platter.. the information in her book is the same i found in many others.. same tragedy's.. i am referring to a specific cultural niche, not all, of course are clones of a horrific system, but if they aren't they live in constant fear of discovery under Sharia law.. there are 442 things a person can do under Sharia law that your father, brother, best friend will kill you on the spot for.. or the virtue police will arrest you for and no one will defend you in virtue court because if you lose they most likely will suffer the same punishment.

From Booklist
Chosen by Glamour magazine as a Woman of the Year in 2008, Nujood of Yemen has become an international hero for her astonishingly brave resistance to child marriage. Sold off by her impoverished family at the age of 10, continually raped by her husband before she even reached puberty, Nujood found the courage to run away, and with the help of an activist lawyer, sympathetic judges, and the international press, she divorced her husband and returned home. Her clear, first-person narrative, translated from the French and written with Minoui, is spellbinding: the horror of her parents’ betrayal and her mother-in-law’s connivance, the “grown-ups” who send the child from classroom and toys to nightmare abuse. She never denies the poverty that drives her parents and oppresses her brothers, even as she reveals their cruelty. Unlike her passive mother, she is an activist, thrilled to return to school, determined to save others, including her little sister. True to the child’s viewpoint, the “grown-up” cruelty is devastating. Readers will find it incredible that such unbelievable abuse and such courageous resistance are happening now. --Hazel Rochman

Product Description
From the front page of The New York Times to YouTube, Dr. Wafa Sultan has become a force radical Islam has to reckon with. For the first time, she tells her story and what she learned, first-hand, about radical Islam in A God Who Hates, a passionate memoir by an outspoken Arabic woman that is also a cautionary tale for the West. She grew up in Syria in a culture ruled by a god who hates women. “How can such a culture be anything but barbarous?”, Sultan asks. “It can’t”, she concludes “because any culture that hates its women can’t love anything else.” She believes that the god who hates is waging a battle between modernity and barbarism, not a battle between religions. She also knows that it’s a battle radical Islam will lose. Condemned by some and praised by others for speaking out, Sultan wants everyone to understand the danger posed by A God Who Hates.

About the Author
WAFA SULTAN is a Syrian-born American psychiatrist included on Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2006. She created a firestorm on Al-Jazeera as the first Arab Muslim woman on that network who demanded to be heard.."

Wafa also has a Fatwa for her death.. Fatwa knows no boarders, actually there are 2 fatwa's one for defaming islam and another for Apostasy, quiting islam is a death sentence in numerous islamic republics and in many families.. as Vigilantism is encouraged under Sharia law. that is how the reality of these storys have been hidden for 1400 years.. thru fear

yes in many situations Dowry is as you say.. and in many it isn't. selling a child to a psychotic animal is Slavery. it happens all the time because of this specific cultural niche. you will never know anything about it except when courageous women like Wafa and Nonie come forward and reveal its daily horrors suffered by millions of women and children..

read their books,

the west knows so little about what is really happening because the media is afraid to tell the truth.. they only get to speak when get to follow some horrific story already out.. and always without any explanation of why this happens. people

Edit:.. i didnt read FMG was done, i dont think a pediphile isnt going to mutalate and sew up the vagina of a little girl, he will keep raping her till ghe grows out of his prefered infantile prophile, then he might, and get another younger one.. but he would probably sell her as a slave or kill her. the UAI is the world's hub of child sex slavery.

29. Do they have any kind of sex ed over there?
If they are going to allow this type of thing to happen, they need to have some kind of education about having sex in these circumstances.

31. what good is a dead bride?? Don't these men get it? There is a reason that
marriage is between adults. I cannot believe that they find this custom in their Koran. It must be a skewing of some cultural idea.

36. In socialist south Yemen, this practice was actively opposed.
Of course, the US opposed this government and subverted it, just like socialist governments in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

In 1974, south Yemen implemented a secular, progressive family law that banned forced, polygamous, or child marriages. And the force of the state backed it up, imprisoning those who subverted it. Now sharia guides everything, in the cruel, post-Cold War order.

49. you cant judge an entire nation by a number of incidents.
i am democratic american citizen. but i am also a muslim and
I'm married to a yemenese man. I have lived in yemen for
three years and seen all types of lifestyles. First i want to
say it is horrible what happened to that young girl. These
are not the beliefs of all muslims or all yemenese. It isn't
fair to judge this country and call it barbaric because some
people live that way. Yes in the rural areas some people live
a different way of life. Some tings they do are wrong, but
we cant judge everyone by this. A lot of people here are
against this idea of marrying your daughters young. No one i
know would practice such a thing. To most this is an old
pastime that has faded from their modern lives. Girls now
like to finish school, some even finish college before
thinking of marriage. We do need to do more to stop the
people that do practice this from doing it. But nothing can
be done by criticizing the whole nation and insulting everyone
yemenese or muslim. And as democratic americans i don't see
how you could judge something like this, have you been judged
by the things that go on in america? You act as if america is
perfect, but it is far from it. There is as much going on
there as anywhere else. America has rape, murder, robbery,
pedophilia, etc. Every crime you can think of happens in
america. No where is perfect, no where is safe. I lived in
america all my life and have seen some of the worst lifestyles
lived. But we cant judge any country on these things.
Nations are very diverse, made up of many different people and
ways of life. Please remember this before ignorantly judging
something, especially something you haven't even experienced
and witnessed for yourself.
