Netanyahu to skip Obama summit
By: Laura Rozen and Josh Gerstein
April 8, 2010 07:05 PM EDT

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has abruptly canceled his plans to attend President Barack Obama’s nuclear security summit next week, creating an embarrassing distraction on the eve of a high-profile meeting the White House has sought to carefully choreograph.

An Israeli official confirmed Netanyahu’s decision not to attend, which was revealed by Israeli media outlets Thursday afternoon Washington time.

“In the last 24 hours, the Israeli government has learned of various reports from various sources on the intention of several states attending the conference not only to deal with the issue at hand, but to take the opportunity to make a point of grand-standing against Israel and the issue of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty," the Israeli official said. "The prime minister was dismayed at this, and decided to stick to the Israeli policy that Israel is usually represented at these types of conferences at the professional-ministerial level.”

3. Netanyahu cancels trip to Obama's nuclear summit
Netanyahu cancels trip to Obama's nuclear summit
By Douglas Hamilton

Thursday, April 8, 2010; 9:00 PM

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled a planned trip to Washington next week for President Barack Obama's 47-country nuclear security summit conference.

He made the decision after learning Egypt and Turkey intended to raise the issue of Israel's presumed nuclear arsenal at the conference, a senior government official said on Friday.

Israel is believed to be the only nuclear-armed power in the Middle East but has never confirmed or denied that it possesses atomic weapons. It has not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, or NPT.

Netanyahu saw Obama at the White House late last month for talks on the stalled Middle East peace process with the Palestinians, but they failed to see eye to eye and relations between the two leaders remain at a low ebb.

"The prime minister has decided to cancel his trip to Washington to attend the nuclear conference next week, after learning that some countries including Egypt and Turkey plan to say Israel must sign the NPT," the official said.

Israeli media said Netanyahu feared that Islamic countries attending the summit would try to shift its focus from nuclear terrorism to a concerted attack on his country's presumed nuclear weapons capacity.

25. If RW humans don't protect Israel, how can an omnipotent God possibly return to Israel?
Edited on Fri Apr-09-10 05:28 AM by No Elephants
And if He can't possibly return to Israel, how can the Rapture possibly begin?

And if the Rapture can't possibly begin, how is everyone going to get to heaven before they die? (Everyone wants to get to heaven, but no one wants to die.)

It's beyond me why you find any inconsistency or contradiction in this.

You do at least know that credit card swiping (aka buying and selling with the mark of the Beast) and the European Union are all over the Book of Revelation, right? If not, I think helping you may just be beyond my amateurish abilities.

Get yourself to a "professional" eschatologist, STAT. Preferably, with a nice donation in hand.

29. What madrchsod said in Reply # 14.
Remember the Godfather, where Duval's character said something like, "If I accept a message for Sonny, it could be said in a court of law that my acceptance implies that I have knowledge about his whereabouts?"

Similarly, attending a nuclear conference could imply that your nation either has nukes or has thoughts about acquiring them.

Well learned from the Mafia, Grasshopper Bibi!

30. Guardian: ...likely pressure from Egypt and Turkey over Israel's presumed atomic arsenal

Netanyahu pulls out of Obama's nuclear conference

Withdrawal prompted by likely pressure from Egypt and Turkey over Israel's presumed atomic arsenal
Peter Walker and agencies
guardian.co.uk, Friday 9 April 2010 08.46 BST

<snip>

Officials in Netanyahu's office said this morning that the decision was made after it emerged that Egypt and Turkey planned to raise the matter at the 47-nation event, Reuters reported.

A spokesman for Obama's national security council confirmed that the US had been informed that Netanyahu's deputy, Dan Meridor, would be travelling instead.

Israel is widely presumed to have a nuclear weapons arsenal, but refuses to discuss the issue under a so-called ambiguity policy. The country has never signed the international nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

<snip>

Speaking earlier this week, Netanyahu said he had hoped to use the conference to press for action over the fear of terrorists or "rogue" regimes acquiring nuclear arms and did not think he would be sidetracked by issues over Israel's weapons.

"I'm not concerned that anyone would think that Israel is a terrorist regime," he told reporters. "Everybody knows a terrorist and rogue regime when they see one, and believe me, they see quite a few around Israel."

It would have been the first time an Israeli prime minister had attended an international nuclear forum.
