Senate committee subpoenas Fort Hood documents

"In a rare public dispute between a Democratic-led Congress and the White House, a Senate committee on Monday subpoenaed the Obama administration for secret documents and access to witnesses in last year's mass shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.

Congress has been largely supportive of President Barack Obama's policies and the White House prides itself on increased government transparency. Nonetheless, the chairman and ranking Republican of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee have alleged that the administration is covering up critical details on the case, including whether the government had access to information that could have prevented the shooting.

"Unfortunately, it is impossible for us to avoid reaching the conclusion that the departments simply do not want to cooperate with our investigation," wrote Sens. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, in a letter accompanying the subpoena.

The Defense and Justice departments say that release of the disputed data would compromise the prosecution of Maj. Nidal Hasan, the disgruntled Army doctor charged with killing 13 people."

2. Holy Joe's sudden enthusiasm for subpoenas deserves notice.
He might have some hidden agenda in mind. Nevertheless, I can't really object to a public airing of any and all public documents.

3. Of course, this is the only senate committee chaired by a de-facto republican.
Lieberman should have been stripped of his chairmanship a long time ago.

5. We do have 3 branches of gov and I think that congress

has a right to this information as it deals with our troops. IF Bush had withheld any information, My guess is that the poop would hit the fan.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. lawmakers subpoenaed the Obama administration on Monday for information sought in a congressional probe of last year's shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, that left 13 soldiers dead and an Army psychiatrist charged with murder.

U.S.

Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, an independent, and Susan Collins, the panel's top Republican, took the action after the departments of Justice and Defense failed to provide the materials by Monday's deadline.

The two senators have been trying for months to obtain documents and be provided access to witnesses that they say are critical to their investigation of the shooting spree at Fort Hood in November that ended with 13 soldiers killed and dozens wounded.

An Army psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, has been charged by the military with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder. The case drew heavy criticism after it became known Hasan had been in contact with an anti-American Muslim figure sympathetic to al Qaeda.

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, who heads the Justice Department, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Lieberman and Collins wrote: "It is impossible for us to avoid reaching the conclusion that the departments simply do not want to cooperate with our investigation."

9. I tried to tell Jay Rockefeller to oppose Lieberman's appointment to chair this committee.
That was back when the 111th Congress organized in January 2009. Jay wouldn't listen.

Lieberman hasn't been in the limelight for awhile and needs some attention. And he needs to kiss some more GOP asses to shore up Republican support for when he next runs for office.

20. Yup. Liebermonster turns what his Party is guilty of on Obama that way when and if
the Dems pursue past actions like this, people will just say it is revenge. He needs to be locked out, fired, demoted, trashed, censured, you name it. What an ass.

24. Too bad the DNC and prominent Democrats, incl. Obama and Hillary,
campaigned for Lieberman against Lamont, then stranded Lamont after the primary.

Maybe we should re-examine the "incumbents uber alles" policy?
