Minutemen: John McCain switch 'shameful'
Source: Politico

A co-founder of the anti-immigration Minutemen on Monday dismissed Sen. John McCain’s new, tougher immigration stance as “shameful election-year politics.”

The Arizona Republican, who’s seeking a fifth term this fall, is now supporting an Arizona bill that allows law enforcement officers to demand proof of citizenship – even if they just suspect illegal status – and detain suspects until the federal authorities can determine their citizenship.

McCain’s move, announced Monday, is a dramatic shift right from his more moderate, comprehensive approach to most immigration issues.

Chris Simcox – co-founder of the Minutemen and a supporter of McCain’s Republican challenger, J.D. Hayworth – said in a statement released by the former congressman’s campaign that “for almost three decades, McCain had the office and the opportunity to help close the borders to illegal aliens, and he did nothing.”

2. As a resident of So Arizona
I must drive through checkpoints on the way to Tucson. I understand the need to control the border, but the checkpoints are not right.
"Let me see your papers" seems like aa police state.

3. Back in 1990 (or 91?)
...I was driving a friend from Pakistan through a fruit checkpoint border crossing (I forget which state did this), and as I slowed down and eagerly rolled down the window he started to flip out a bit about his passport being in the trunk.

"No, no," I said, "It's for fruit."

He looked at me like Americans are all insane. :D

invasive species, ala the rabbit in Australia, bamboo anywhere in the US, etc.

18. Off topic but I have a question...
Are there drug sniffing dogs at the checkpoints in Southern Arizona? Any places that you know of in New Mexico or Arizona that a person needs to watch out for in that respect?

21. Yes, there are drug sniffing dogs, at the same check point
mentioned above, north of Whetstone. A dog alerted on a friend of mine, his truck was driven 60 miles away to be Xrayed. He had to sit in the back of a Border Control car. When the Xray showed nothing, he was released, 3 hours later, and lost the time and gas.

25. Yes, there are dogs.
I go through the checkpoint between Gila Bend and Ajo pretty regularly. I've only had to open the trunk once, though.

9. Think about what items you typically carry around on a daily basis....
Is there a single one of them that absolutely proves your citizenship? Unless you carry your passport around, the closest thing is a driver's license, but in the strictest state you might have gotten that while covered by a visa that has since expired.

The minutemen want to give police unrestricted power to detain anyone they want to unless they can prove on the spot that they shouldn't be detained. Another group of "patriots" who talk about freedom but dream of a police state.

26. Talk about a changey thing not working for ya. McCain changed every one of his
positions before he ran for President. http://crooksandliars.com/2008/06/16/mccain-sets-a-new-record-10-flip-flops-in-two-weeks#comment-642275

Not to mention sucking up to Dummya, despite one of the most despicable Rove tricks having been used in the South to knock McCain out of the primary race when Dummya was first seeking the Republican Presidential nomination, namely, implying that McCain had an out of wedlock, interracial love child. Yet, not long after that ....

Talk about selling your soul. MMA--Maverick, my ass.

28. Not surprising that the Minutemen support Hayworth, though McCain's flip-flops prove his
insincerity.

"In 2005...Hayworth became a militant foe of Mexican immigration. Not just illegal immigration. Hayworth proposed a moratorium on legal immigration from Mexico. He declared an intention not merely to secure the border but also to "stand up for our culture" -- which implies that Mexicans adulterate American culture. Hayworth warned of activists who would create an Aztec state on the ruins of American sovereignty in the Southwest.

Hayworth now presses his anti-immigration message in a primary challenge to McCain -- contesting for the right to run for the Senate in a state that is about 18 percent Hispanic. To this appeal, Hayworth has added a "birther" message accusing President Obama of "identity theft." Here he is on legalizing gay marriage: "I guess that would mean if you really had affection for your horse, I guess you could marry your horse." "

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/19/AR2010041904131.html

The Minutemen would love to see Hayworth get elected to the Senate. He may be a secret (or not-so-secret) member of the organization. :)
