Pirates seize 77 crew

Nairobi - Somali pirates hijacked three Thai fishing vessels with 77 crew members over the weekend in one of their most daring raids so far, a maritime official said on Tuesday.

Patrols by European Union warships since December 2008 to deter hijackings have done little to dent the enthusiasm for piracy among Somalis.

"This was in the Indian Ocean but far away from the east coast of Africa," said Andrew Mwangura, co-ordinator of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme. "This is the farthest hijacking to date. They are now operating near the Maldives and India."

Somali pirate attacks have continued apace and have spread south to the Seychelles and farther out towards India.

But the poor people with guns keep taking the aid from the poor people without guns, and threatening those who provide the aid with guns until they stop giving out aid.

Of course, the poor people with guns tend to not be poor, by local standards, but if you say that they'll threaten you with guns. Well, not so much with the guns themselves but with the little lead slugs that come out of the guns.

It's part of the "you have to keep your hair covered but don't wear any bra because we like to watch them bounce, he-he-he" campaign.

For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.
