Hispanics fear profiling under new Arizona law
Source: Associated Press

PHOENIX — Arodi Berrelleza isn't one of the targets of Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigration — he's a U.S. citizen, a high school student from Phoenix.

But the 18-year-old said he's afraid he'll be arrested anyway if police see him driving around with friends and relatives, some of them illegal immigrants.

"If a cop sees them and they look Mexican, he's going to stop me," Berrelleza said. "What if people are U.S. citizens? They're going to be asking them if they have papers because of the color of their skin."

Berrelleza's concerns were echoed by Hispanics across the state Saturday, a day after Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill that requires police to question people about their immigration status — including asking for identification — if they suspect someone is in the country illegally.

Whatever happened to the Republican effort to reach out to Hispanics? Now, its seems like they are saying "screw it," and will just try to intimidate them into leaving the country of at least staying at home on election day.

3. BUT, that is THE INTENT of the new law.
It is not to rid us of illegals. It is to make Hispanics, which are to become a majority, cower. SUCCESS.

2. I'd fear being shot. The laws in Arizona favor guns over people.
Now that being Hispanic is a 'crime,' the unregulated gun owning population is going to take the new law into their own hands.

7. God, you're dull.
Always humping your anti-rights position.

Too bad you never have any facts or logic to back it up.

4. Az Law
Anyone know what organizations are leading the protests?
Why doesn't someone talk to MLB, after all they have players from all latin american country's. I think a quick and decisive response from business and baseball would be crippling. Remember how much money the state lost due to their refusal to recognize MLKs day. If the NFL did it as a response for an insult toward black americans, should,t MLB do the same out of respect for its players. Just a thought. What would happen if MLB pulled spring training, refused to play in AZ. All minor league teams pulled? Step up MLB.

10. Welcome ! and someone here posted this earlier from The Progressive re: The D-Backs

As the official Arizona Diamondbacks boycott call states, “In 2010, the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s third highest Contributor was the Arizona Diamondbacks, who gave $121,600; furthermore, they also contributed $129,500, which ranked as the eighteenth highest contribution to the Republican Party Committee.” The team’s big boss, Ken Kendrick, and his family members, E. G. Kendrick Sr. and Randy Kendrick, made contributions to the Republicans totaling a staggering $1,023,527. The Kendricks follow in the footsteps of team founder and former owner Jerry Colangelo. Colangelo, along with other baseball executives and ex-players, launched a group called Battin’ 1000: a national campaign that uses baseball memorabilia to raise funds for a Campus for Life, the largest anti-choice student network in the country. Colangelo was also deputy chair of Bush/Cheney 2004 in Arizona, and his deep pockets created what was called the Presidential Prayer Team—a private evangelical group that claims to have signed up more than 1 million people to drop to their knees and pray daily for Bush.

If the owners of the Diamondbacks want to underwrite an ugly edge of bigotry, we should raise our collective sporting fists against them. A boycott is also an expression of solidarity with Diamondback players such as Juan Guitterez, Gerardo Parra, and Rodrigo Lopez. They shouldn’t be put in a position where they’re cheered on the playing field and then asked for their papers when the uniform comes off.

12. What exactly were they praying for?
"a private evangelical group that claims to have signed up more than 1 million people to drop to their knees and pray daily for Bush."

I'm speechless.

6. Obama and Janet Napolitano share responsibility for this being passed.
It was simply irresponsible for Obama to appoint Napolitano to a cabinet position, and it was irresponsible for her to accept. Handing gubernatorial offices to the likes of Jan Brewer is NOT what progressives should be doing.

11. Are you serious? Where is the sarcasm emote?
Has the thought occurred to you that the politicians of Arizona may be doing this because (1) they are racist and (2) they think it help them get elected? Heck, John McCain is out there saying that immigrants are running amok trying to cause auto accidents. And, you blame this on President Obama for appoint Janet Napolitano, because she might have been in a position to veto this law.

You do know that Arizona has terms limits and that Janet Napolitano would have been termed out after this year?

13. Of course neither Napolitano nor Obama support this measure.
But it is absolutely true that their action set the stage for it becoming law at this time. And other bad things have happened as well, such as repeal of domestic partner rights and health care coverage for children, that would not have happened had Napolitano remained at her post, to which the people of Arizona elected her.

This is a question of principle: do not hand the levers of power to your enemies.

14. And, will a birth certificate even be believed? There is actually no way to
prove who you are -- perhaps even short of fingerprints or DNA testing!!

"Your papers, please" . . .

Isn't this what Repugs always accused Dems of being headed to with Social Security numbers!!

And who put SS numbers all over everything -- Repugs!!
