State reps want to fight violence with National Guard's help
Source: WGN

Two state representatives called on Gov. Pat Quinn Sunday to deploy the Illinois National Guard to safeguard Chicago's streets.

Chicago Democrats John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford said they want Quinn, Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis to allow guardsmen to patrol streets and help quell violence. Weis said he did not support the idea because the military and police operate under different rules.

"Is this a drastic call to action? Of course it is," Fritchey said. "Is it warranted when we are losing residents to gun violence at such an alarming rate? Without question. We are not talking about rolling tanks down the street or having armed guards on each corner."

What he envisions, Fritchey said, is a "heightened presence on the streets," particularly on the roughly 9 percent of city blocks where most of the city's violent crimes occur.

1. Is it really that bad? Chicago has always been a bit rough.
Besides, there probably aren';t enough NG in the US to do it! They're allin Afghanistan!

3. The areas of the city being discussed here are like the "wild west".
Between the gangs, the poverty, and the crooked cops who work with/for the gangs etc., it's pretty bad. Unacceptable availability of firearms. Drugs, drugs, drugs...

2. Skip the military. Bring in an army of US Marshals.
I agree that mixing police and military is dangerous. Bring in US Marshals trained in urban assault.
Train CPD officers in urban assault. I know the areas of the city being discussed here. Very dangerous areas. Very "wild west". Some sort of a strong show of force is appropriate.

4. Shouldn't they be dispatched instead.

To some of the sectors that cause much of the poverty, or feelings of lack of justice that can sometimes lead a person to disregard civil laws, mostly due to the example set, and allowed in other sectors?

Making people think the problem is the thug on the corner, and not in an office building, is an old ruse.

9. enough blame to go around
but poverty is not always the cause of lawlessness. the bottom line is human beings must take responsibility for their actions.

6. This is a Posse Comitatus violation.
One would hope someone in the gubirmint would recognize that.

7. Unfortunately, I don't think the Posse Commititus rule
applies to the National Guard. Sending the NG to fight foreign wars is not right either. I think the previous post about arresting the banksters and the crooked cops and pols. is a good one. We have to declare a "War on Poverty" that trumps any other war. When your nation has the worst distribution of wealth IN THE WORLD, you are going to create more and more violent criminals.

11. Maybe a thin line...
but as long as the national guard remains under the control of the governor, I think you're right. It most likely is not a violation.

8. Gee. Do you think the barbarians at the gates?
If you grind whole sections of your citizens down into miserable and counterproductive poverty what exactly do you expect will happen?
