Pundit picks Palin for 2012 presidential bid
Source: Santa Cruz Sentinel

SEASIDE — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin stands good odds of being the Republican nominee for president in 2012, according to two of the nation's top political strategists who visited the Monterey Peninsula on Monday.

"I think she loves it," said popular television commentator James Carville, noting that he is willing to bet that Palin's enthusiasm for the political spotlight carries her to the GOP presidential ticket.

Carville, an outspoken Democrat, was joined by former Republican Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at a brief press conference before Monday's Panetta Institute lecture. The two are this month's featured guests at the speaker series.

Bush, downplaying chances that he would seek the office held by his brother and father, was less certain that Palin had the Republican nomination locked up — or even was ready for the job.

1. The more famous the pundit, the more likely that they are wrong.
Why Pundits Get Things Wrong
The best predictor was fame: the more feted by the media, the worse a pundit's accuracy.

4. Well of course she loves it
I have no doubt that she'll run for president. That doesn't mean she'll win the nomination. Americans are dumb, but I don't think we're THAT dumb.

8. They are that dumb.
She's got great political instincts and she's being propped up by some serious money at this stage of the game.

Carville knows it. He knows she's got backing. He sees the charisma. While I hate and dislike him intensely, he's married to another consummate political insider. If Mary Matalin believes she's a contender (and I'm guessing Carville is parroting shit he hears from "her side"), it's because she is.

25. That nomination doesn't depend on Americans, it depends on Republicans
However, even though conservative leaders have shown a recent tendency to play with fire in stirring up their fringe, I doubt that even Republicans are dumb enough to pin their hopes on a Palin candidacy. We can hope, though...

13. They'll pair her with an old school Republican puppetmaster, a la Cheney.
I'd say James Baker is perfect for the gig, but he's a little long in the tooth, and he probably would refuse the assignment anyway.

The RNC explains the puppet/handler scenario away simply adding "gravitas" and foreign policy experience to the ticket.

You know Palin would go for it in a minute. Not having to listen or read policy and make decisions would leave her free to appear on TV in ceremonies and shop.

10. Put Palin on "Meet the Press" and "This Week" for some hard
questioning and Sarah will melt down. It would/will be disastrous for her. Being a few freedom fries short of a Happy Meal is not going to help her at all during an Obama vs Palin debate scenario. The president would/will clean her clock so bad she would/will go into hiding from deep embarrassment.

The fix will be in. She is the perfect stooge for the big money boys, and the big money boys have been given Carte Blanche by the Supreme Court.

31. Bingo! Besides, Republicans don't get hard questions on Meet the Press.
Russert used to brag about hard questions to both sides. Difference was, he asked Republicans questions to allow them an opportunity to rebut and then state their side of the story, often nodding some as he did that. No follow up questions, or meatballs. With Democrats, he had plenty of follow up questions, and did his best to shred them. And that was Russert, to whom at least a pretense of journalistic fairness seemed to be important.

Gregory unabashedly fawned on Dummya. Doubt he will do less for Sarah.

As far as This Week, George Steph gave Democrats a harder time than Republicans, IMO. I have not watched his successor enough to have formed an opinion about his objectivity or lack thereof. I find ole Jake a bit of a snooze; and I am dead tired of George Wills and Cokie Roberts (aka Wills in drag).

Let's face it, though. The media is not even handed and is owned by Republicans.

14. I hope your right
I know Obama will kick her ass, but will average Joe Plumber see it that way? I remember the Bush Gore debate, and Gore won every one as far as I saw it. But the news media apparently saw it different. Hell they didn't even question that bulge on his back in 04. It's up is down. They criticize Obama for using a teleprompter, but don't criticize when the candidate is dip shit like Palin. With Bush it was so obvious. They never really asked him tough questions. Sarah will get the same treatment. After all the stupid since Obama took office it kinda scares me to think she will even get to debate him. If she gets that far, we might be in pure disbelief.

I had thought I would love to see a Palin/Bachmann ticket. If they steal it like in 2000 we may be in some deep doo doo.

29. I think people would notice
All Sarah spews is word salads. She will of course have devoted fans who will say she is a GREAT debater, but anybody in their right mind, knows, this woman is... I'm sorry for the word.... A BIMBO. There can be no better way to describe her. She is NOT intelligent at all. She has no credible plan for anything at all, there is one thing she can NEVER be because she has no relevant plan, and that is SPECIFIC.

Buzz words like "TAX CUT", and "SMALL BUSINESS OWNER", and "Patriot" are great if your serving red meat on a stick. I just don't think it will cut it with people who are concerned about America, regardless of party.

"You need to go seek knowledge. You can't just be set in your ways" The world is really complex," he said. "If (Palin) does that along the way she'll be a formidable candidate."

LOL, what a nice way to say, you're too stupid to be POTUS. Is she planning on returning to school?

Jebbie knows idiots can go all the way to the Oval Office since his idiot brother did it. All that's needed is a little help in flipping electronic votes and/or the SCOTUS.

19. Election of 1824 Redux
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_of_1824

Third Party Spoiler = no candidate receives minimum number of Electoral Votes required to win Presidency.

U.S. Constitution requires House of Representatives to choose the President.

House of Reps will be Democrat. Palin will be given "victim" status by mainstream media & called "President In Exile" until she is sworn-in by John Roberts in a national emergency.

Hillary Clinton will be the 2012 candidate.

Beware 4/4/15.

40. That may be, but I still hope she does not get the nomination.
Even if she loses in a landslide, she will have been the presidential candidate of one of our two major political parties and she will have a big platform for spewing her hate during the campaign. And who knows? Never say "never" in politics. What if it were close enough for them to steal the election? Or what if we have some kind of catastrophic terrorist attack right before the election that clouds the judgment of the voters? Like I said up thread, even the remotest chance that she could get elected scares the hell out of me.

37. Absolutely it's all about the money

Alaskan bloggers on both sides have been saying since the election that Palin would hate to go back to the governor's office because her popularity in the state was dropping and it was "hard work being governor". They predicted she would quit and go after the money since she got a taste of it during the campaign.

38. "Good odds"? The numbers say otherwise
From a February Washington Post story:

Although Palin is a tea party favorite, her potential as a presidential hopeful takes a severe hit in the survey. Fifty-five percent of Americans have unfavorable views of her, while the percentage holding favorable views has dipped to 37, a new low in Post-ABC polling.

There is a growing sense that the former Alaska governor is not qualified to serve as president, with more than seven in 10 Americans now saying she is unqualified, up from 60 percent in a November survey. Even among Republicans, a majority now say Palin lacks the qualifications necessary for the White House.

Palin has lost ground among conservative Republicans, who would be crucial to her hopes if she seeks the party's presidential nomination in 2012. Forty-five percent of conservatives now consider her as qualified for the presidency, down sharply from 66 percent who said so last fall.
