Immigration bill should mirror Arizona plan, sheriff, state rep. say (Ohio)
Source: Middletown Journal

HAMILTON — Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones and state Rep. Courtney Combs today, April 27 plan to ask legislators to back an immigration bill similar to Arizona’s in an attempt to crackdown on people living in Ohio illegally, according to Local 12 WKRC.

Jones and Combs said they would send a letter today to the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, demanding that an immigration bill get unstalled and that Ohio follow Arizona’s lead on illegal immigration, according to Local 12.

Last year Combs, R-Hamilton, introduced a bill that would require employers to check the Social Security numbers of new employees to assure they are in the country legally. Combs said in May 2009 the bill about giving jobs to Americans and taking away a paycheck from illegal immigrants during tough economic times.

Jones, who has gained a reputation of taking a hard line on illegal immigration, said the bill also is about giving law enforcement more teeth to stop illegal immigrants with fake documents.

As introduced last year, the bill would require all public and private employers to check Social Security numbers against the federal government’s free E-Verify system before hiring someone.

1. If the teabaggers get their way
We will all be carrying citizenship papers to show on demand to the local jackbooted Gestapo.

Progressives better put a stop to this Nazism in Arizona or it will be too late!

4. This is starting to sound a little like the Nazis
Different race of people, different time, yet they are singling out one group.

What's next, making them wear something like this:

7. The nazis also started as a group of people who "wanted to take their country back"
I can't wait to see a republican candidate start floating the idea of requiring hispanics to start wearing a yellow patch with the Virgen de Guadalupe on their clothing at all times.

I thought the term "ghetto" applied for centers of minority of population was an unfortunate coincidence. I am starting to see I was wrong.

Good grief. We even have our own version of the Good Americans... I most definitively was not expecting to see this in the XXI century in America.

10. Yup...
Too bad our "All Children Left Behind" education plan, must have stopped teaching about the horrors of Nazis and WWII Germany.

Every time I read this article it gives me shivers.

2. Well...
Employers should check SS numbers through E-verify to make sure they are valid, and those "EMPLOYERS" who don't and go ahead and hire illegals should be targeted, investigated, and fined. We need a "real" immigration program where those employers who really do need help can get "legal" workers to come and work. They need to prove they can "NOT" find any other workers, and they need to provide safe working conditions, and pay a decent wage instead of paying less to the "illegals" because they can get away with it.

We also need to do background checks to weed out the criminals who we do not need in this country. We can make the system work, but we need to get everyone who is here already illegally to come forward, and follow he process of getting legal status to work here. If we go after the employers and force "them" to follow the laws we can solve the problems. Way to may employers are using illegals to avoid paying decent wages, benefits, and to keep wages down. They abuse the illegal workers, sometimes lay off "legal" workers to hire illegals, and provide unsafe working conditions and long hours for those who are afraid to report them because they are not legal!

8. But then they can not have it both ways:
They want to victimize a group who can't fight back, and they also want to play the victim.

Enforcing proper labor practices is hard, and would most likely interfere with the interests of the business folk (part of the republican base). It is easy to just go for the escape goat, and if that escape goat is the lowest strata of our society and is defenseless... even the better. Bullies tend to not pick on people who can punch back. Do they?

19. Yep!
Republicans always "talk" a lot about illegal immigration, but when they had a chance to do something about it, they did nothing! The biggest abusers of illegal workers happen to be republicans who want to break unions, and keep low wages while breaking the law! If the republicans did anything about the problem they would be losing money from those groups that "want" an illegal work force, so as you said they scapegoat the people who come here to work while letting he employers off the hook, and that needs to stop!

This bill won't pass in the Democratic-controlled Ohio House.

11. True, it won't pass here. One advantage of having Democratic control of the House, as well as
a Democratic governor, is that we are spared from some of the far-right lunacy produced in Republican-controlled states.

That doesn't stop republican politicians from trying to out-conservative each other to appeal to the teabaggers and far right of their party, particularly in primary season.

9. E verify program...uh-huh
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 12:10 PM by SoapBox
"require all public and private employers to check Social Security numbers against the federal government’s free E-Verify system before hiring someone."

Now I will tell you, I've never used it.

But...it has been in the news, multiple times, that it is NOT 100% accurate. Like most things. There are errors in the database which, of course, cause the potential new hire to be flagged as having a fake SS number.

And just like trying to get off of the "No Fly List", getting the E-Verify data corrected is not an easy task.

So how many illegal Mexycans have crossed the borders into Ohio?

...this stuff is pure hate...

I don't know how many Mexicans have crossed to Ohio, but here on my side of town, there is a huge majority of Russian immigrants, rather than Hispanics. How many of them are legal???? I have no clue, and frankly, I couldn't tell the difference between a recent Russian immigrant and any other white person..... they come here to live, work and raise their families just like any other "American".... it's just hateful fear mongering; BE AFRAID!!!! THESE PEOPLE HAVE A DIFFERENT CULTURE THAN "TRUE AMERICANS"...... but honestly, I welcome and enjoy other's customs; that's what makes America interesting, IMO.

13. Ah, some world-beating breakthrough legislation.
It took them both to hatch this one. You can see from their photos, we're dealing with some high-voltage brainpower here.

They probably imagine this is their ticket to re-election.

14. Whatever happened to the part of the constitution that
gives us the freedom of movement in this country? If people are threatened with jail time for not having "proper" papers, that curtails our freedom of movement through the fear of arrest.

16. immigration
I don't fully support this law but the feds have neglected to secure the border/enforce the law for the last 20 years. Instead of being the world's police, there should be troops on the border. Also, repealing NAFTA would help.

18. The "feds" have wasted billions of dollars building a wall and hiring more border patrol agents.
If that is "neglect", I wish they would neglect the border a little more cheaply than they have been doing. The right-wing pushes the "neglect" them because it reinforces fear of the "invasion" form south of the border. "We're not doing enough to stop the "invasion". Do more. Spend more. Be afraid. Be very, very afraid."

If you want a good wall and border guards who are willing to shoot, hire some of the many unemployed East German border guards. They know how to build a mean wall and don't hesitate to shoot you if you try to sneak over, under, or around that wall. You could never be sure if our troops would shoot those people in the desert if you told them to.

That's "the East German solution" to border control. A dream come true. My country will become more like East Germany. Goods walls make the problems go away. ... Only they don't. The problems that East Germany's wall was hiding from view, were never dealt with. In 1989, when the guards stopped shooting and the Wall proved itself to be useless without bullets, the problems, ignored for so long, came back with a vengeance.

But that's only a problem during unusual winters. Global warming should take care of it.
