Unemployment falls in a majority of US cities
Source: Associated Press

Unemployment rates fell or remained level in three-quarters of the 372 largest metropolitan areas, a sign that the economic recovery is widespread.

The Labor Department says the jobless rate dropped in 69 percent of metro areas last month, rose in 24 percent and remained the same in the rest.

That's an improvement from February, when the unemployment rate decreased in 51 percent of metro areas and increased in one-third.

I'm unemployed, and I find this encouraging.

1. It is an encouraging sign.
It is encouraging news. I wish you well in your job search. My sister - after an extended period of unemployment - landed a new job last month.

6. Don't lose hope.
My sister got a job after 15 months. My neighbor has been out of work since September 2008 and she was just offered a position this week.

15. I've applied at Google in Boulder
They bought a small, local company. No luck, but I'd love to get on there.

10. And I'm one of them. I ran out of Tier IV, and there is no Tier V, so apparently
they have no problem with another wave of homeless folks hitting the streets. I'm confident I'll be protected, and I'm praying for protection for everyone else who is in the same boat I'm in. However, from the standpoint of policy, this situation is completely unacceptable.

26. This is why
The numbers are so deceptive. Once your benefits run out, you're no longer counted.

I'm sorry, but your anecdotal evidence is not an indicator.

12. something doesn't smell
right.

Unemployment fell in 69% of the metro areas but yet, the overall unemployment numbers didn't change:

Still, the growth wasn't enough to bring down the unemployment rate, which remained at 9.7 percent for the third straight month.

18. They're talking U-3,
which is almost meaningless now.

Look for U-6 which includes semi-discouraged workers and the total number of people working reported.

They are in the biggest part of the employment part now. They hire many people from all over.

19. I dunno how they calculate "unemployment" down there
.
.
.

but up here

our numbers depend on who is COLLECTING unemployment benefits

so if you are not COLLECTING benefits

you don't "count"

22. i am employed
and anecdotally speaking, the traffic to and from work has gotten noticeably worse in the past few weeks. i figure it must be more people working.

23. I've noticed the same thing about traffic
There's more on the weekends, as well, which I assume (and hope) means that more people are out spending money.

24. Then again, it could be people LOOKING for work
.
.
.

I moved from my small town of 2000 to a city of 50,000 nearby in hopes of employment opportunities.

every day - EVERY DAY I was on the bus to job search centres for the whole day for over 9 months.

I suspect many with vehicles do the same thing

SO

I wouldn't judge the amount of traffic related to people working

sumthing to ponder

(btw - I moved back to my small town after 6 years - nothing worked out)

(sigh)

25. I've noticed the same thing...
It usually slows down during spring break, but not this year. I have to leave earlier and earlier to fight the traffic.
