New York marchers protest Wall Street, big banks

Several thousand demonstrators marched through the New York financial district on Thursday in a protest led by labor unions, saying Wall Street's biggest banks must account for record profits while average Americans still suffer financially.

Spearheaded by the AFL-CIO, the march made its way through the downtown Manhattan financial district with signs saying "Wall Street overdrafted our economy" and "Reclaim America, hold banks accountable."

The march featured a variety of organizations and labor unions with grievances about the economy and jobs.

Union member Kurt Hallman, an electrician who was marching in the rally, said the big banks "let everybody here sink to the bottom."

Once again, as financial reform is being debated, where are the mad-as-hell at Wall Street Tea Party crowd?

1. How much of this was covered?
I know FOX gives hours of coverage to every Tea Party that draws a crowd of a couple of hundred.

Did they bother covering the several thousand marching today? Inquiring minds want to know.

4. Dunno, but the TV trucks were lined up for a solid block on B'way.
And I passed a couple of interviews that were being filmed, one at the Bull of Wall Street which is not on Wall Street. Maybe it has another name. Bull of Broadway doesn't have the zing, though.

2. "Several thousand"? Oh, I think we did better than that.
I'm not a union member and I was there. Marching alongside a neat lady who worked at Riker's and a guy who was awfully good at making up chants. The cops were politely dispersing us at Battery Park while Broadway was still full and marching toward it.

The police did a very good job of giving the march space that still allowed traffic to proceed, btw. And heavy brass were onsite with the rank and file hours before the march was scheduled to begin.

3. K& R for "The Other 98 Percent"!
One group at the rally dubbed itself "The Other 98 Percent" and called for policies that focus on "the rest of us" instead of the wealthy.

"We're not here to say get rid of the markets," said Marco Ceglie, a co-founder, "just that they need adult supervision."

9. May we have many more marches like this
The predator class needs to be put on notice and made nervous; we're looking at the makings of a class war in this country.
