Immigration law cutting into Hispanic hires
Source: Phoenix Business Journal

Arizona’s new immigration law — combined with the existing employer sanctions law — is prompting more employers to eschew hiring Hispanic workers for fear of running into trouble.

The result could propel more discrimination claims for Hispanic workers who feel unfairly treated on the job.

Local labor and employment attorneys say they are increasingly seeing the trend of businesses opting to not to hire Latinos or laying Hispanic workers off, even if they are U.S. citizens or have legal status.

“We have heard of employers who have questioned whether Hispanic workers should be resubmitted through the current e-verify system in response to this legislation. This is exactly the type of response that is ill-advised and could land employers in hot water,” said Shayna Balch, a labor attorney with the Phoenix office of Fisher & Phillips LLP. Dave Seiden and Julie Pace, immigration and employment attorneys with the Cavanaugh Law Firm, said they already see the trend with employers worried about raids from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Seiden and Pace said they have clients calling them about the new immigration law expecting that measure to result in more raids and scrutiny.

“They don’t want to run the risk of being targeted by the sheriff or anyone else. They don’t want the hassle,” said Pace.

1. If the employers would have done it right in the first place, they would have nothing to worry about

2. "They don’t want the hassle" What a laugh! All employers need to do is hire legal, pay
legal. If employers were forced to follow the law, and clean up their nearly slave labor advantages, the magnet for illegal immigration would reverse polarity.

4. Well now who could have predicted that?
After all, Gov. Brewer categorically stated that the new law was not about racial profiling, and she'd be flying hither and yon across the length and breadth of the State of Arizona to be sure that nobody was singling anybody out.

5. My friend who is a tile contractor hires illegals all the time as laborers.
There a meeting place for illegals on a block two towns north of me, where small contractors (and others) hire them for day labor.
