1. Oh, holy shit!
:scared:

I hope it's a false alarm.

Come on, Obama - don't build more rigs, put some serious goddamn money into alternative fuel development!

4. If true, I hope it simply overturned while moving it.

10. It is very much like a large mobine crane falling off a barge that's transporting it.
Actually a fairly frequent type of accident. It isn't connected to a free-flowing oil well and it's in a narrow channel where it will be comparatively easy to contain any spilled fuel of which there might be a couple thousand gallons at the most.

21. Why not wait until there is more substantial news about it?

This does have the feel of the press being hypersensitive after this initial catastrophe. But we'll get more of the facts in coming days.

6. Rig is IN the WATER
via Huffington Post....

Reuters is reporting that another offshore drilling rig has overturned in the gulf coast, this time in inland waters close to Morgan City, LA. Reuters writes that the Coast Guard has responded to an "accident" at a "mobile inland drilling unit."

The Coast Guard has put out the following press release on the incident.

MORGAN CITY, La. -- The Coast Guard is responding Friday to an overturned mobile inland drilling unit (MIDU) in the Charenton navigational canal south of Highway 90.

The MIDU has a 20,000-gallon diesel fuel capacity, and while there is no current estimate on how much fuel was on board at the time of the incident, on-scene Coast Guard pollution investigators have determined that the rig is not leaking fuel at this time. As a precaution, 500 feet of containment boom has been deployed around the rig, with an additional 500 feet arriving to provide a secondary string within the canal.

The Coast Guard has established a safety zone 1,000 yards on either side of the incident, prohibiting vessel traffic from entering the area without permission from the Captain of the Port. A salvage plan is currently being developed for Coast Guard approval.

There are no reported injuries and the Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.

19. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida
Maybe Mexico and Cuba too if this thing doesn't get stopped soon. I'm in Louisiana and I don't feel particularly singled out by God.

12. Offshore Drilling... what a brilliant idea, especially with all the deregulation
cutting corners to save nickels and dimes while creating destruction that costs more in the end. Fucking greedy assholes should be forced to filter the oil out of the water with their mouths!

13. Oh, good - all it really comes to is "Giant metal construction topples in transit to scrap yard"
Doesn't matter that it's an oil rig.

Thank God!

I was afraid it was something that actually mattered.

14. Wrong
it toppled on a barge in the WATER, they had to put booms in the water around it - but now they say it's not leaking.
It could have ended up making a huge mess in the water.

16. It was about empty
Weird coincidence though.

"It had a 20,000-gallon diesel tank but carried only about 200 gallons of fuel when it capsized."

17. No it couldn't - even the irresponsible wouldn't move it with a full tank of diesel fuel.
They're too money-conscious to risk losing $75,000 worth of fuel or whatever the fuck it would be worth.

20. That depends on your definition of 'huge'
A few hundred gallons of diesel seems like a huge problem if you're local and it's your bayou. It doesn't seem so huge in comparison to the oil slick the size of Montana that's drifting your way out of the Gulf.

22. LOL - it's so funny when the scientifically illiterate (which is about 99.9% of America) speak.

Thanks!

While your statement proves how utterly ignorant the average American is about anything that is even close to approaching science, and is therefore utterly terrifying, it's also utterly hilarious because of the fact that even the most scientifically ignorant person could, through simple logic and common sense, achieve a higher level of understanding of basic principles of reality than you have showed here.

"Could have ended up making a huge mess in the water" - No, sorry, it couldn't have - because it had nothing on it that could have made a mess.
