Children’s Tylenol and Other Drugs Recalled
Source: The New York Times

The McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit of Johnson & Johnson has voluntarily begun a recall of certain children’s over-the-counter liquid medicines because of manufacturing deficiencies, the Food and Drug Administration said Saturday.

The deficiencies may affect the potency, purity or quality of the products, the agency said in a statement.

Consumers should stop using certain lots of infants’ and children’s Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl products because some of them may contain too much of the active ingredient, McNeil said in a statement late Friday. Other products may contain tiny particles or inactive ingredients that may not meet testing requirements, the company said.

1. Wow, isn't there some kind of testing before the product goes out and harms too many
so that the company has to pull the product? I mean really, I made aspirin in General Chem my freshman year. WTF are they doing to cut corners and costs?

2. Having worked in factories on occasion......
I can tell you that quality control (as in number of inspectors) is the first thing they reduce when looking to save on production costs.

It's corporate ethics in action.

15. more than likely buying the ingredients from China or India
We could be making all of it ourselves right here where we have some control but no the drug companies have to make more money.

10. McNeil Consumer Healthcare Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain OTC Infants’ and Children's Product
Source: McNeil

Fort Washington, PA (April 30, 2010) – McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is voluntarily recalling all lots that have not yet expired of certain over-the-counter (OTC) Children’s and Infants’ liquid products manufactured in the United States and distributed in the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Dubai (UAE), Fiji, Guam, Guatemala, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Kuwait. (SEE RECALLED PRODUCT LIST BELOW).

McNeil Consumer Healthcare is initiating this voluntary recall because some of these products may not meet required quality standards. This recall is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse medical events. However, as a precautionary measure, parents and caregivers should not administer these products to their children. Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified; others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles. While the potential for serious medical events is remote, the company advises consumers who have purchased these recalled products to discontinue use.

12. Sigh. My son's sick today, he ran a fever
and I gave him a dose of the recalled Tylenol suspension, because frankly - there is nothing else that the Dr. recommended for his pain.

13. Wish I knew which lots are affected
I have both meds, and my son is sick today - had to give him a dose of 1.6mL of Tylenol for his pain earlier (he was running a fever)

Tylenol - lot #AMM330 (this one opened about 3 months ago)
Motrin - lot #AMM414 (This one can be returned, it is unopened)
