Dead turtles wash up in Pass Christian

By DONNA MELTON - dmelton@sunherald.com

PASS CHRISTIAN — Dead turtles found at the water’s edge in Pass Christian on Saturday will be studied for a cause of death.

Moby Solangi, head of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, said workers searched for 10 turtles reported to have washed ashore, but could recover only six before dusk.

The turtles were taken to the freezer at the Center for Marine Education and Research in Gulfport and would be necropsied Monday to determine what killed them. Solangi said a visual inspection of the turtles did not reveal oily residue.

He said the turtles were found on a half-mile stretch of beach. “It’s unusual to see this many at one time,” he said

1. Maybe it is the chemicals they are using to try to stop the oil volcano
Or the inhaled smoke from the "controlled burns".

This is such a big mess.

2. May their death have been quick.
I still can't believe that the beautiful Gulf Of Mexico will be dead, no life.

Just stinky oily water.

I have been crying about this for many days.

3. TW - I don't think many people have grasped how serious this is -
TV idiots are talking about cleaning this up and washing birds with detergent. I am afraid you are correct - the gulf may be doomed.

4. I hope I am wrong about this.
The reason I moved to Houston was because it was close to the Gulf.

There are so many beautiful areas along the Gulf many people never see.

So much wildlife will die or never come back.

I thought Ike was bad, this is 1,000,000 Ikes.

So many people are going to loose their jobs, homes and lives.

I knew when I saw the news the first day this was bad.

No one can drill that deep and be safe.

25. Little Oil Boyz
thinking that they can CONTROL and RAPE Mother Nature absolutely make me sick.

This is the result.

I hate them and their Corporations.

This can reach the Atlantic Ocean and say bye-bye to the eastern Florida Coast as well...hell the oil gets in the Gulf Stream and it heads to Europe.

I've known this was going to happen...it was only a matter of time.

7. Well, at least for our lifetime.
There will be some microbe somewhere that finds the petrochemicals to be munchy treats. But the life we know and depend on, the life cycles of the birds, and fish, and mammals and plants in the region, all that is disrupted to despair. Starving pelicans have been walking up to west coast strangers begging for food, now the Gulf is poisoned. This is our food chain as well as theirs.

And this is only the beginning.

we are intent on wiping out as many species as we can, all the while bringing ourselves to extinction.

My heart is breaking, thinking of the devastation this oil is wreaking upon the wildlife and the oceans. And the people too.

I'm not sure it's related to the oil spill, since the ones in Texas are definitely not.

12. 2012, looks like it coming true.
If this oil can't be stopped it will keep going until there is no more oil that pocket.

You know there had to be a lot of oil for them to drill.

13. 10s of millions of barrels
They won't say it publicly, but someone from BP admitted anonymously that it contains 10s of millions of barrels.

10s of millions of barrels. It could be hundreds of millions of gallons.

That movie Soylent Green always gave me the chills.

Also the movie On the Beach.

Hope some miracle can come along.

I wondered if I would ever get to see 70 or 80 years old.

Might not live to see 60 now.

I have had a good life, damn this is depressing.

30. I'm 56 too
I'm not looking forward to the coming years. I've seen this coming for a long time. 7 years ago I moved north to Maine to escape, to the degree possible.

If I'm able to sell my house, I may move further north and into the mountains, again to escape as much as is possible. Ultimately, of course, there is no escape. Just buying a little more time, trying to leave a smaller footprint with each move.

23. Reagan took the solar panels off the White House after Jimmy Carter installed them.
This is an extension of that mindset.

I am ashamed of the people who were supposed to lead our nation over these decades. I am disgusted by those who voted for them. I am repulsed that these same people exert power in our political processes.

what does it take for people to wake the fuck up in this nation?

I hope to god this is not the death of the gulf and all of the horrific consequences of this around the world.

27. ....and Jimmy Carter always spoke of energy conservation.
I don't hear too much of that talk anymore. If you look up the amount of oil used in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, it is astounding.

A pet peeve of mine is also seeing out of shape men or overweight adolescent boys, riding on loud gas-guzzling lawn mower tractors. And the patch of suburban grass they are mowing is minuscule!

26. Perhaps asphyxiation.
When sea turtles are sleeping, they float at the top with just their nostrils exposed. This is when so many of them are hit by boats:cry: If they were sleeping near the explosion, or later when all those fires were set, they just wouldn't have much oxygen to breath.:(.

Even if they were not asleep. they periodically must come up for air. They were not designed to come up to air polluted with burning oil.

(I have changed my signature line to designate a place on the NC coast where I have volunteered. The sea turtle hospital is always full, with the sick and injured, usually a result of man's actions. I feel so helpless right now. I just sent them a donation. I wonder if Halliburton and BP would send them a donation, as well....... :grr:

28. this is the breeding time for turtles in Fla..they lay their eggs and come into shore at night and
nest..

This makes me so sick to my stomach.

So many here in Fla have fought for so long and so hard to keep lights off on our beaches in the nesting period ..from Hotels and restaurants, and condo's ...so the turtles don't get confused of where the horrizon is...so they can always get back to sea..in the very early mornings ..

it just makes me sick.

we rope off the eggs on the beach ..and people stay away from them so they can not be disturbed..

Last year my beach had 5 nests in the last week of April going into May..right in my backyard......this year none.

SeaWorld ready to help with oil-affected animals

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ORLANDO -- As an oil spill moved closer to the northern coast off the Gulf of Mexico Saturday, wildlife teams removed the first oil covered bird from the water.

Experts predict there are hundreds more like it out there, and marine life will continue to be affected.

"The primary issue is just that exposure, could be animals skin, feathers, fur which can cause very rapid problem for an animal," said Dr. Chris Dold, SeaWorld V.P. of Veterinary Services.

Oil keeps ducks from floating and makes them very cold. Animals that ingest or inhale oil or the fumes can also die.

The spill is expected to be the biggest since the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.

SeaWorld helped in that disaster and several smaller spills since, and are ready to help again.
