Court to close main entrance to public
Source: MSMBC

Beginning Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court will no longer allow visitors to enter the building through the massive bronze doors at the top of the prominent steps in front of the building. Instead, visitors will enter through side doors at the base of the stairs. Two of the current justices say that's the wrong thing to do.

The new entrance, the court says, will include a screening area to check for weapons, explosives, and chemical and biological hazards. The change is part of the court's multi-year modernization project. The new secure entrance was designed "in light of findings and recommendations from two independent security studies conducted in 2001 and 2009," a court statement says today.

Visitors will still be able to leave the court through the doors at the top of the stairs.

2. What I don't understand is why you must show ID to enter a court
Why?

They don't check it against anything.

They don't check it against a "ticket" of any sort. nor any list.

But if you don't have an ID you can't enter.

Why does have a piece of plastic with my picture on it in my pocket make us any safer?

5. Oh come on- people need to be screened for weapons, don't they?
How can the guards do it at those huge doorways? All courts and all the congressional buildings have weapon screening in place.

Now the insanity of this court wanting screening when they throw out the laws localities enact to protect average citizens.....that is another and separate matter.

6. This is silly... Don;t they know it's already illegal for people to carry guns in DC?
Why would they have to screen people... they already CANT have guns in DC anyways.
