Roanoke.comA University of Virginia men's lacrosse player was jailed on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of a women's lacrosse player in the bedroom of her off-campus apartment today, police said.
George Huguely, 22, of the Washington suburb Chevy Chase, Md., was charged in the death of Yeardley Love, 22, of Cockeysville, Md., Charlottesville police said. Police Chief Timothy Longo said the two "had a relationship in the past."
"What the relationship was last night, I can't say," Longo said today at a news conference outside police headquarters. He wouldn't say what led police to Huguely.
Love, a senior, had played in 15 of 18 games for the UVa women's lacrosse team but did not see action Saturday, when the Cavaliers played at Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. Huguely, also a senior, has played in all 15 games for UVa's top-ranked men's lacrosse team.
Both would have graduated May 23.
Police were summoned to Love's 14th Street apartment at 2:15 a.m. by one of her two roommates, Longo said. Initially, police said they were called for "a possible alcohol overdose."
"It was quickly apparent to them that this young lady was the victim of something far worse," said Longo. She had "obvious physical injuries" and had been dead for some time, said the chief. No weapon appeared to have been used in the killing, Longo said.
Love was pronounced dead at the scene.
