Homeless feared killed in Nashville flooding
Source: NBC News and news services

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Rescuers feared even more bodies would emerge as muddy flood waters ebb from torrential weekend rains that swamped Nashville, much of Tennessee and two neighboring states, leaving at least 29 dead.
In Nashville, police told NBC News that they managed to evacuate some from a tent city of homeless people downtown, but fear they may end up finding bodies soon.
"Those in houses that have been flooded and some of those more remote areas, do we suspect we will find more people? Probably so," Nashville Fire Chief Kim Lawson said. "We certainly hope that it's not a large number."
Thousands of people fled rising water and hundreds were rescued, but bodies were recovered Monday from homes, a yard, even a wooded area outside a Nashville supermarket.
In Nashville, the Cumberland also deluged some of the city's most important revenue sources: the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center, whose 1,500 guests were whisked to a shelter; the adjacent Opry Mills Mall; even the Grand Ole Opry House, considered by many to be the heart of country music.

1. As someone who had once been my
friend said of those who died in Kartrinia, 'it's their own damn fault - they could have gotten out'.

Needless to say, she is still breathing, I'm not in jail and we are no longer friends.

Do people who say this stuff have one cell of empathy in their entire body? :grr:

3. People who were evacuated from the Opryland Hotel bitched about having to stay in a high school.

Yeah, I know, sleeping on the floor sucks, but many of the staff who were waiting on them hand and foot were worried about their own families and didn't know if they would have houses to go home to when it was all over.

And while they whined about their ruined plans for a lavish weekend, people were drowning.

I was up all night Saturday watching the creek that's usually little more than a mud puddle slowly creep up into our yard, just waiting for it to get into the house. I knew we were in trouble when the water went over the bridge and they couldn't evacuate the nursing home behind us.

9. We were lucky, the space under our house was flooded but not the floor.

Which means all of the things that live under our ancient house will now be bunking with us (bf will be killing widows for months).

No big drama here, I was ready to help at the nursing home but they were fine. It just sucked because bf was stranded in Clarksville and I was alone and unable to leave. And the dozens of severe thunderstorm, flood and tornado warnings that kept blasting out of my weather radio didn't do much to help my state of mind.

I had to stay busy so I took a lot of pictures and saved some stranded critters.

It's much much worse in Clarksville and Nashville.

Thanks for asking, I wonder why so many people didn't know about this.

6. Your welcome
I had to preemptively rescue my granddaughter from the duck river sunday night.
Everyone did their job, and thanks to that, I think it will be a smaller story.

10. Most of the people who lost their homes don't have flood insurance.
This is a 500-year flood and most were not on floodplains.

The reservoirs have been contaminated, electrical substations demolished and many gas lines are still leaking.

The total damage done to homes, businesses and property is incomprehensible.

14. Just got an emailed pic of inside the Grand Ole Opry
the whole auditorium is flooded and water is covering the stage. The cost to clean up this mess is going to make TN wake up to the state of the nation in other places. I've heard that the property damage done in TN will surpass what Katrina did, albeit not in loss of life.
