Dog and human hair sent to Gulf of Mexico to help clean up oil spill
More than 200 tonnes of human and dog hair is on its way to the Gulf of Mexico to help stop oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill washing ashore.

The hair, collected from beauty salons and pet owners across the United States, will be stuffed into nylon stockings, which will be tied together to make protective barriers.

The effort is being co-ordinated by Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based charity set up in response to the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska. It says the same qualities that help hair absorb skin oils are useful in mopping up crude.

Phil McCrory, a hairdresser who works with the charity, said: "You shampoo your hair because it gets greasy. Hair is very efficient at collecting oil out of the air, off surfaces like your skin and out of the water, even petroleum oil."

Hair from cats, sheep and alpacas has also been donated by tens of thousands of people at 15 collection points across the US. Thousands of nylon stockings have also been donated.

4. Matter of Trust - Gulf Oil Spill - How Everyone Can Help
Edited on Fri May-07-10 03:16 PM by pinto
http://matteroftrust.org/

GULF SPILL HAIR BOOMS IF YOU WANT TO HELP THE GULF COAST DURING THIS OIL SPILL - EVERYONE CAN!

No matter where you are. No matter if you're with a salon or groomer or a wool farmer or if you're an individual with a pet.

First, please SIGN UP to our Excess Access program. It's FREE and FAST. It is our mass donation matching database system.

Please note: We, will be only sending out mass email alerts for this Gulf Spill duration. If you click unsubscribe, you will no longer get the alerts. You can email us if you need to be re-subscribed.

DISCLAIMER: Matter Of Trust is providing a safe, non-toxic, effective way to participate in the Gulf Spill clean up. Donors from every state in the US, from Canada and beyond are sending in hair, fur and wool clippings as well as nylons and funding for outer mesh. This is used to make Booms that can protect beaches and white sands.

Boom B Q's (boom making parties) are cropping up all over the Gulf and now in other states as well. The booms will be stored in donated temporary warehouse spaces all up and down the Gulf Coast. IF BP and UNIFIED COMMAND need more boom, the Gulf Coast residents, and the donors from all over, will have provided an unprecidented support, supply of materials and volunteer hours, for their assistance!

Matter of Trust does not condone untrained residents touching the oil! Leave that to the protected HazMat professionals. What we are all orchestrating is a NATIONAL FIBER RECYLING SYSTEM. Hair and Fur are more effective than deployed fiberglass and petroleum fiber based boom materials. The hope is that the industry engineers will take this up and run with it!

We do not believe that it makes sense to drill oil to make products that clean up oil spills, when we are throwing away hundreds of thousands of pounds of natural, renewable fiber each day that is far more effective and could easily be recycled and used for this purpose.

Thank you all!

participating. They didn't know anything about it but called me today for the website address and were enthusiastic about being able to do something.
