GIs ‘afraid to deploy’ over spouses’ illegal status
By Julia Preston
updated 1:09 a.m. PT, Sat., May 8, 2010

Lt. Kenneth Tenebro enlisted in the armed forces after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, signing up even before he became an American citizen.

He served one tour of duty in Iraq, dodging roadside bombs, and he would like to do another. But throughout that first mission, he harbored a fear he did not share with anyone in the military. Lieutenant Tenebro worried that his wife, Wilma, back home in New York with their infant daughter, would be deported.

Wilma, who like her husband was born in the Philippines, is an illegal immigrant.

"That was our fear all the time," Lieutenant Tenebro said. When he called home, "She often cried about it," he said. "Like, hey, what’s going to happen? Where will I leave our daughter?"

1. It's much easier for military people that have married
Edited on Sat May-08-10 10:05 AM by xsquid
foreign born spouses, or spouses in other countries to legalize them. They even ask on the paperwork if you were married while in the service. I'm not sure why he has not done this already, I could not count the number of sailors that married filipinas (12 years USN for me). It takes some work, especially if they are here illegally already, but it's something that should have been done long ago.

4. The part about having to live out of the country for
Edited on Sat May-08-10 10:24 AM by xsquid
10 years is waived hundreds (or thousands) of times daily. The only time anyone actually has to do it is if they have committed crimes here, and I'm not talking about speeding. They have to go to the philippines to get it, but if she's not a major criminal she would get a waiver and not skip a beat. I'm not saying it doesn't suck, but it's not as hard as it sounds.

5. Bullshit
Hundreds or thousands of times daily? give me a break.

My son is here legally and even he has been waiting to get his permanent residence for over 10 years.

Sure, it's easy to take risks with other people's lives. Oh don't worry about it, just go back to the Philippines and then come back. The INS will take good care of you.

There is absolutely no guarantee of anything. It just depends on what INS asshole you end up dealing with and these fuckers get their rocks off lording over people.

6. Have you ever gone through Juarez?
Edited on Sat May-08-10 11:06 AM by xsquid
I have I'm mexican born with a mexican wife amd mexican born kids, been through juarez many times. Every day there are many people that are here illegally getting their papers done, easily in the hundreds. Illegal presence starts accruing at the age of 18. 180 days but less than a year illegal presence = 3 year ban. 1 year or more = 10 year ban. The ban starts the day the illegal person departs the US. However, as I stated an I601 waiver is typically issued as long as the person is not a criminal, and there are at least hundreds daily worldwide even that many in juarez. Is it easy or even fair? No, so if you don't have the testicular fortitude don't even bother.

The people in the juarez consulate are miserable, even worse on the bridge checking through, and what is suprising is that the latina's/latinos are the worse. The wife has never forgotten it, me neither. The bad part is that we weii be there more before its over with. Pretty much every 5 years.

What the fuck is sure in life? Just because your sone is waiting the 10 years does not mean most are not, how old is he? Over 18 and committed crimes? We have never had any problems with someone with a clean record, probably be legalizing family members every 5 years from now on (unless amnesty happens).
