Indirect peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis mediated by the United States have begun, according to a senior Palestinian official.

Negotiator Saeb Erekat was speaking after a meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and White House envoy George Mitchell.

In the next four months, Mr Mitchell is to shuttle between Mr Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to try to narrow their vast differences over the terms of a Palestinian state.

Mr Mitchell has already held several meetings with both Mr Abbas and Mr Netanyahu in the past week.

US envoy meets Abbas as indirect peace talks begin
May 9, 2010, 11:00 GMT

Jerusalem - US Middle East envoy George Mitchell met Sunday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in a meeting which a senior Palestinian official said kicked off indirect peace talks with Israel.

'We can say that the proximity talks with Israel have started,' Saeb Erekat said, using Washington's preferred term for the long-waited talks.

Abbas himself will head the Palestinian team in the talks, which will discuss the so-called permanent-status issues.

On Saturday the Palestine Liberation Executive Committee approved the indirect negotiations with Israel, one week after the Arab League gave the talks the green light.

1. I'm beginning to think that Turkey, which has a record of decent relations w/ Israel,
would be a more honest broker for Israel-Palestinian peace talks.
